Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The New York Mets have announced the promotion of 2010 draft picks RHP Matt Harvey and OF Matt den Dekker to the Binghamton Mets.
Harvey was the seventh overall pick in last year's draft out of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The Connecticut native went 22-7 with a 3.73 ERA in three seasons as a Tar Heel. In 43 career starts, Harvey averaged more than a strike out per inning, fanning 263 batters in his time with UNC.
Following his selection in the first round last year, Harvey signed late and did not pitch in 2010. He made his pro debut this season with the St. Lucie Mets, leading the High-A affiliate to the South Division First Half title in the Florida State League.
Regarded as the fourth-best prospect in the Mets' system by Baseball America, Harvey jumped out of the gate by winning his first four games without allowing an earned run. In 14 starts with St. Lucie the 22-year-old went 8-2 with a 2.37 ERA, averaging 10.9 strike outs per nine innings.
Harvey joins fellow first round draft picks Reese Havens (2008) and Allan Dykstra (Padres, 2008) on the B-Mets roster.
Den Dekker makes the jump to Binghamton after hitting .296 in 67 games with St. Lucie (High-A). The Florida native was selected in the 5th round of last year's draft out of the University of Florida.
Arguably the top defensive outfielder in school history, den Dekker is one of only two players to ever be selected to the SEC Defensive Team in three straight seasons.
At the age of 23, den Dekker is in his second year of pro ball. He made his debut last year with the GCL Mets (R) before ending the season with Savannah (Low-A).
The B-Mets (23-45) continue their series against the Akron Aeros tonight. LHP Robert Carson (2-7, 4.19) will be opposed by LHP Matt Packer (2-7, 3.39). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:20pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
