Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - After taking the first two games of the series, the Delmarva Scrapple were lapped by the Down East Wood Ducks 12-1 on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The contest between the Scrapple (45-35) and Wood Ducks (44-36) was silent for the first four frames until Down East struck in the fifth.
Thomas Saggese singled to start the frame and Yenci Pena followed with a double. After a strikeout, Daniel Mateo chopped a double down the leftfield line to plate both runners. A passed ball pushed Mateo to third and after a lineout, Keyber Rodriguez doubled him home. Cristian Inoa then reached on an infield single before Angel Aponte slapped a single to center to score Rodriguez and make it 4-0.
The Shorebirds got their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Cristopher Cespedes doubled with one away before an error allowed Ryne Ogren to reach and put men at the corners. Trevor Kehe then lined a single to left to score Cespedes to cut it to a 4-1 game.
Down East scored eight unanswered from that point forward. The Wood Ducks started with five in the sixth thanks to a Mateo RBI single, double steal of home, Rodriguez RBI single, run scoring wild pitch, and a run scoring double play.
Jose Acosta hit a solo homer in the eighth, his first of the year, before Alejandro Osuna poked an RBI single to make it 11-1.
Pena capped the rout with a solo homer, his first of the year, to lead off the ninth to make it 12-1.
Florencio Serrano (2-0) started and picked up the win for the Wood Ducks. He allowed just an unearned run in five innings on three hits and a walk, striking out six.
Adam Stauffer (3-3) was handed the loss in relief for Delmarva. Stauffer conceded four runs in 1.2 innings on four hits and a walk, striking out one.
Noah Denoyer started for the Scrapple and posted three scoreless frames, striking out four while allowing just two hits.
The Scrapple will try to bounce back as they return to their Shorebirds identity against the Wood Ducks on Friday, August 6. Houston Roth (6-1, 3.25) is scheduled to go for Delmarva against Mason Englert (4-3, 4.41) for Down East. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
