Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

State College, PA- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers entered Monday night's game looking to rebound from the lopsided loss the night before to State College. While they played a better game and held the lead late in the ballgame, they were unable to hold the lead and lost 4-3 to the Spikes after a 2 run 7th inning.

Caleb Hamrick started and turned in his longest outing of the season. After two subpar outings for Hamrick, he was very good in a 6 inning outing. In those 6 innings he allowed 2 runs, both earned on 4 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 4. The only blemish for Hamrick came in the bottom of the 1st inning. With 2 outs, David Washington hit his 3rd homerun of the season for the early 2-0 lead. Hamrick left after the 6th inning with a 3-2 lead. Ben Heller (0-2) relieved Hamrick in the 7th inning. Heller struggled to get through the inning. He allowed 5 consecutive singles to start the inning. An RBI single by Jimmy Bosco scored Matthew Young to tie the game. Then Bruce Caldwell singled home Bosco to give the Spikes the lead to stay.

Offensively the Scrappers were led by Ryan Battaglia. With the Scrappers trailing 2-0 in the top of the 4th inning with 2 out and 2 runners on, Battaglia blasted a towering 3 run homerun over the 410 foot sign in centerfield. Cody Ferrell led the 10 hit attack with 3 singles. Juan Romero added 2 as well.

The Scrappers were able to get the tying and go ahead runs on base in the 9th inning when Romero and Ferrell delivered back to back 1 out singles. However, the Scrappers were not able to push a run across.

The Scrappers and Spikes will continue their series on Tuesday evening at 7:05pm. The Scrappers return home on Wednesday, July 10th to begin a 6 game home stand. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets.
