Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
BURLINGTON, VT (July 8, 2013) - The trip was not supposed to be easy. After a long, weary night of traveling, the Hudson Valley Renegades didn't have much time to think as they controlled Sunday night's game en route to a 4-2 win. But ask anyone in this league, and they'll tell you every game presents a different challenge, especially in another team's ballpark. The Vermont Lake Monsters seized this advantage and got one in the win column on Monday night with a 4-1 victory at home. Once again, the problem for the Renegades was no offensive power after the fifth inning.
For the second straight evening, the teams were scoreless after the third. In the first two innings, the Renegades got runners into scoring position but could not bring them in against Vermont starter Bobby Wahl. However, they finally got to Gregory Paulino in the fourth inning after a one-out double by Johnny Field. Oscar Hernandez then strode to the plate and delivered the game's first run with an RBI single. The problem was that the 'Gades would not score for the remainder of the ballgame.
Chris Kirsch was dealing against the Lake Monsters and benefitted from a 1-0 lead through the first four innings. But in the fifth he'd hit the leadoff batter Chad Pinder before retiring the next two hitters. Josh Miller kept the inning going with a single and Christopher Wolfe's base hit into right brought in Pinder to tie the score. Kirsch would stay in the game for the sixth inning and put a couple of runners on before retiring Pinder and Michael Soto to close out his night.
Hudson Valley's lone baserunner during this time came on a leadoff walk to Patrick Blair in the seventh. Paulino (2-2) then struck out Granden Goetzman before John Alexander and James Harris were set down on a couple of fly balls to the outfield. Vermont broke the 1-1 tie in the home seventh against right-hander Justin Choate (1-1) after Wolfe walked with two outs. Wilfredo Solano singled to center, and with a remarkable display of speed, Wolfe scored as he was running on contact to give the Lake Monsters a 2-1 lead.
The two out magic would continue in the bottom of the eighth with a runner at second base. Soto hit his first home run of the season over the left field wall to add two more runs and put Vermont ahead for good 4-1. Sam Bragg earned his first save of the year by retiring the Renegades in order in the ninth to shut the door.
NOTES: Blair's walk in the seventh gave the Renegades their only baserunner after scoring the game's first run in the fourth...Hernandez' RBI single gives him 16 and places him third in the league...the six innings for Kirsch matched his longest outing of the season, his only win in Aberdeen on June 18.
The series concludes Tuesday morning with a rare start time of 11:05 AM. After the game, the Renegades will return home to The Dutch on Wednesday, July 10 for the start of a six-game homestand against the Jamestown Jammers and the State College Spikes.
