Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT ---  Gregory Paulino allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts over six innings of relief for the win, while Michael Soto had a double and a two-run homer in the eighth inning for a pair of insurance runs as the Vermont Lake Monsters defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades 4-1 in New York-Penn League action Monday night at historic Centennial Field.

Vermont starter Bobby Wahl, a fifth-round pick in the 2013 draft by Oakland out of the University of Mississippi, gave up two hits with three strikeouts over two scoreless innings in his first appearance with the Lake Monsters since being promoted from the Arizona League Athletics. Paulino came on in relief to start the third allowed one run on three straight one-out hits in the fourth inning to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.

But after the third straight hit in the fourth, Paulino would go on to retire 14 of the last 15 batters he faced with the only baserunner a leadoff walk in seventh. Paulino (2-2) finished with five strikeouts in his six innings for his second win, while Sam Bragg (also making his Lake Monsters debut) tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn the save.

Vermont tied the game 1-1 in the fifth on a Chris Wolfe two-out RBI single to sore Chad Pinder, who was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning. The Lake Monsters took the lead in the eighth with two outs when Wolfe walked and scored all the way from first when Wilfredo Solano hit a high pop up into the twilight behind second base that fell in-between three Renegade fielders for an RBI single.

Soto, who had doubled in his first at bat, smacked an 0-1 pitch from reliever Justin Choate over the leftfield fence with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Lake Monsters the 4-1 lead. Soto and Jaycob Brugman both had two hits for Vermont (9-13) as Lake Monster batters combined for just one strikeout in the contest.

Hudson Valley starter Chris Kirsch allowed one run on six hits over six innings, while Chote (1-1) three runs on three hits in two innings to take the loss. It was just the second loss in 12 road games for the Renegades this season.

Vermont and Hudson Valley will wrap up the series at Centennial Field on Wednesday beginning at a special start time of 11:05 am. It will be the last Lake Monsters home game until they return from a six-game roadtrip on July 17th.
