Lowell Spinners News Release

BROOKLYN, NY - After tying the game at three in the top half of the eighth inning, the Lowell Spinners could not complete the comeback as a two-out bloop to left-centerfield turned into a run-scoring double as Manuel Margot and Aaron King collided as the ball fell to the ground. Pat Biondi scampered home from second base and the Brooklyn Cyclones held on for a 3-2 win Monday night at MCU Park.

Lowell (11-9) jumped on the board right out of the gate as Tzu-Wei Lin led off the game with a walk. Lin promptly stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Brooklyn catcher Colton Plaia. Manuel Margot followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Spinners ahead, 1-0.

The Spinners would add a second run in the second inning, again taking advantage of a lead-off walk. Reed Gragnani worked the walk and stole second base. After moving to third on a groundout, Gragnani came around to score when Plaia attempted to pick himoff from third base and his throw ended up in left field.

Brooklyn (9-12) took the lead in the second inning, capitalizing on some well placed hits. Jared King led off the inning with a double, advancing on a single by Matt Oberste. After a strikeout, Plaia atoned for his previous errors, doubling to right to score King. James Roche followed with a double of his own to plate two and give the Cyclones a 3-2 lead.

The score remained as so until the top half of the eighth inning when the Spinners again capitalized on a lead-off walk, this time by Margot. Kevin Mager sacrificed him over to second and King singled through the hole, scoring Margot to knot the score at three. King however was thrown out at second as the throw was cutoff and Gragnani grounded out to end the threat.

The Cyclones retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of a lead-off walk to Biondi. After he was sacrificed to second, Jonathan Aro struck out L.J. Mazzilli but King's bloop fell as Margot and King collided allowing Biondi, off on contact, to give Brooklyn a 4-3 lead.

The Spinners would threaten in the top half of the ninth inning, as Cleuluis Rondon led off with a walk and Williams Jerez sacrificed him over to second. Nick Moore followed with an infield single, but Shaun Teufel came back to strike out David Sopilka and Lin to lock down the win.

The Lowell offense struggled for the second consecutive night, picking up just four hits after scoring their first two runs without the benefit of a hit. King extended his hitting streak to eight games with his RBI single, while the Spinners took advantage of the Brooklyn walks to steal four bases.

Jamie Callahan pitched well outside of the three run third, allowing the three runs on four hits and a walk through five innings. He struck out five. Aro (1-1, 1.80) was the tough luck loser allowing the one run on two hits, striking out four in the game's final three innings.

The Spinners look to avoid the sweep and finish the road trip with a win when the two teams meet for an 11am getaway day special. Ty Buttrey (2-1, 3.77) is on the mound for the Spinners.
