Fort Worth Brahmas News Release

Center Mike Oliveira had a goal and two assists and center Chris Richards had a goal and an assist to lead the opportunistic New Mexico Scorpions to a 3-1 win over the Fort Worth Brahmas Saturday night at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

The Brahmas, who were playing their first home game since Nov. 21, gave the fans something to cheer about early on when center Jeff Scharf scored on a bad angle shot from the right side just 1:32 into the game. The Brahmas lead did not last long, however, as the Scorpions tied it up just under two minutes later when Oliveira converted a beautiful backdoor pass from winger Josh Tymchak for a tap in goal at the 3:06 mark of the first. New Mexico then forged ahead when winger Brian Barker lifted a rebound goal past Brahmas goaltender Erasmo Saltarelli at the 15:37 mark of the opening period.

The second period was scoreless, with the highlight of the period coming when New Mexico killed off a 5 minute powerplay for the Brahmas when Scorps d-man Jaroslav Kerestes was whistled for a checking from behind major penalty.

In the third and final period, New Mexico managed to hold off the Brahmas. The Scorpions got an insurance goal from Richards late in the period when he wheeled through the Fort Worth defense and scored a breakaway goal at the 17:50 mark of the third.

Saltarelli took the loss in net for the Brahmas, making 14 saves on the 17 shots that he faced in the game. Danny Lorenz was the victorious goaltender for New Mexico, stopping 20 of the 21 shots sent his way.

The loss was the Brahmas tenth in a row and drops the team's record to 2-14-3 on the season. Fort Worth will wrap up their four game week with a home game tomorrow afternoon at the Fort Worth Convention Center against the Wichita Thunder. Face off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. For more information, please contact the Brahmas office at (817) 336-4423.
