AMARILLO - The two-time defending CHL champion Memphis RiverKings got back on the winning side of the ledger last night, pulling out a 3-1 victory against the Southwest Division-leading Amarillo Gorillas at the Cal Farley Coliseum before 3,091 fans.
RiverKings forward Brad Mueller notched the game-winning goal at the 8:22 mark of the third period, taking advantage of a defensive lapse and scoring on a breakaway to give the RiverKings a 2-1 lead.
The game started with a flurry of shots, as the teams combined for 37 shots in the first period. Gorillas goaltender Jamie Vandespyker, playing in only his fifth game of the season, made numerous key saves, keeping the RiverKings off of the scoreboard. His counterpart, Memphis goaltender Shawn Conschafter, was equal to the task as well, stoppping all 15 shots he faced.
The second period saw Amarillo's only goal, as John Dean deked past a RiverKing and fired a puck past Conschafter to give the Gorillas a 1-0 lead late in the frame.
But the RiverKings, who finished with 44 shots on the game, would answer, as captain Don Parsons flipped a puck off the back of Vandespyker to knot the game at one apiece. Parsons' goal would be followed less than two minutes later by Mueller's game-winner.
The Gorillas would pull their goaltender late in the contest, leading to the final goal of the game, as defenseman Juraj Durco scored on a long shot from his own defensive zone.
The win moved Memphis's record to 15-6-0 on the season. Their 30 points gives them a ten-point cushion in the Northeast Division.
Memphis will be in action again this Tuesday as they face off against the New Mexico Scorpions in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
