Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs became just the second team this season to defeat the Youngstown Steelhounds in regulation with a 4-2 win on Saturday night at the Chevrolet Center .
Three goals in less than three minutes in the second period and John DeCaro's stellar play helped the Mudbugs to their sixth win of the season, evening their record at 6-6-2. The Mudbugs won three of a possible four points during the weekend series in Youngstown .
Both teams started the game with two powerplay opportunities in the first period, but were unable to convert. The period didn't see many quality scoring chances for either team until the Mudbugs got a late chance with the man advantage with less than two minutes to go in the period. With Bossier-Shreveport on the powerplay though, it was Youngstown who would capitalize. As the Mudbugs tried to hold the puck inside the blue line, Mark Odut was able to chip the puck out of the zone to a waiting Joel Irving. Irving went in all alone on a breakaway against John DeCaro and scored his third goal in the past two games against Bossier-Shreveport with only 34 seconds remaining in the period.
Heading into the second down 1-0, the Mudbugs quickly turned the momentum in their favor with a three-goal outburst in 2:46 early in the period. First off, Jason Campbell made a nice cross ice pass from along the boards to a waiting Kevin Cooper on the back side. Cooper slid the puck past Andy Franck to tie the game at one. Bossier-Shreveport was just getting started though, and they got another goal just 1:22 later. Elias Godoy fed a streaking Joe Ori into the offensive zone on the powerplay. Ori found Tyrel Lucas in the slot for Lucas' fifth goal of the season and a 2-1 âBugs lead. Then only 1:24 after that, the Mudbugs did it again as Chris Brassard collected the puck along the boards and threw a wrister toward the net that found its way past Franck. Bossier-Shreveport led 3-1 after 40 minutes.
The Steelhounds weren't done yet though, getting a powerplay goal from Kevin Jarman to cut the lead back to one in the third period. Youngstown thought they had tied the game when a shot from the point came very close to going in off the post. The goal light came on momentarily, but referee Paul DePuydt immediately waved the goal off and the score stayed 3-2 for Bossier-Shreveport. It wouldn't stay that way for long though, after the Mudbugs retook the two-goal lead only moments after the no-goal. Brett Smith entered the zone 1-on-1 with the defenseman and fired a laser over Franck's glove hand to put the Mudbugs back on top, 4-2. Great penalty killing and DeCaro's goaltending did the rest, as the Mudbugs went on the win their sixth game of the year, while the SteelHounds' league-best record fell to 13-2-1.
Each team scored once on the powerplay, with the Mudbugs converting 1-of-7 advantages and Youngstown finishing 1-for-9. The âHounds oushot the âBugs 29-19 for the contest, including a 13-4 shot advantage in the final period.
The two teams will meet again next week, with Youngstown coming back to the CenturyTel Center on Friday night for their fourth meeting of the year with Bossier-Shreveport. Before that though, the Mudbugs will take on the Wichita Thunder on Thursday night at 7:05 at the CenturyTel Center . Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or by calling 318-752-BUGS (2847).
