
Bucks Beat Scorpions 5-2: Win Second Straight Game

LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the New Mexico Scorpions 5-2 Saturday night in, front of 4,081 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center. With the win the Bucks have now won two straight games, and improve their Southern Conference leading record to 13-3-1 (27 points).
Laredo swept the season series with New Mexico 4-0, with Bucks goaltender Dustin Traylen winning all four games in net.
The Bucks jumped out in front of the Scorpions, taking a 2-0 lead after one period. Adam Rivet got it started for the Bucks as he sent in a power-play goal from the left circle at the 9:06 mark, making it 1-0. Rivet's fifth goal of the season was assisted by Serge Dube and Chris Korchinski. The Bucks made it 2-0 a little over five minutes later at the 14:09 mark when Jeff Bes poked in his league-leading 14th goal of the season, off of a rebound from the right crease. Jeff Genovy and Dube picked up the assists. For Genovy it was his first point of the season, after missing the first month with an injury. The Bucks outshot the Scorpions in the period 14-6.
The Scorpions (7-8-1) cut the Bucks lead to 2-1 just 2:39 into the second period as Michael Kolarz sent in a rebound in front of the Bucks net. New Mexico tied the game at two just just a few minutes later at the 6:39 mark when Konrad Reeder sent in a power-play goal from the left circle.
The Bucks (7-1 at home) re-took the lead 3-2 at the 13:57 mark as Genovy sent in a pass from Bes on the left side of the crease. It was Genovy's first goal of the season. Matt Summers also picked up an assist on Genovy's goal. The Scorpions outshot the Bucks in the second period 12-8.
Laredo increased their lead to 4-2 with a short-handed goal at the 11:31 mark of the third period, as Steve Simoes made a hustle play at center ice, with Scorpions goalie Mike Minard playing way out of the net Minard dove at the puck and missed it, allowing Simoes to send the puck into an empty net. The Bucks Rane Carnegie would add an empty-netter with 19 seconds left making it 5-2.
The final nine seconds of the game turned into Friday night fights, as seven different players were involved in separate fights, totaling 44 minutes of penalties. In total the two teams combined for 141 penalty minutes, 73 for the Scorpions, and 68 for the Bucks.
Traylen made 33 saves in picking up the win, while making 73 saves in the last two games against the Scorpions. Minard took the loss in net for New Mexico stopping 26 Bucks shots.
The Bucks are off until Tuesday when they will host division rival Rio Grande Valley at 7pm. For tickets call 718-BUCK (2825).
