Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs converted on 5-of-8 powerplay chances in Saturday night's 8-3 victory over the Austin Ice Bats to sweep the three-game set and improve to 11-4-1 on the season. Six Sundogs gathered multiple-point outings for a combined 18 points. The eight goals marks a franchise high set twice during the 2006-07 season against the Rocky Mountain Rage and Colorado Eagles.
The Sundogs went right to work in the opening 20 minutes of play Saturday night tallying four goals on 21 shots. Karl Sellan opened the scoring at the 7:42 of the period on Arizona's first powerplay of the night as Austin's Jason Tessier was tagged with four minutes in penalties for boarding and roughing. Mark Kolanos and Tyler Redenbach assisted on the play. Less than two minutes later Redenbach grabbed his second point of the game, finding the back of the net on passes from David Schlemko and Dusty Collins. Just past the midway point Austin cut into the Sundogs' lead with a powerplay marker of its own as Jamie Thompson lifted the puck over a sprawling Andrew Gallant to make it 2-1. Defenseman John Neal was credited with an assist on the goal. With 4:14 remaining in the first, Arizona regained a two-goal advantage with its second powerplay tally as Redenbach notched his second goal and third point of the game, beating Ice Bats netminder Miguel Beaudry on passes from Kolanos and Sellan. Forty-eight seconds later Arizona grabbed its biggest lead of the game as Arizona-native Dusty Collins took a pass from forward Michael Bartlett and slid the puck over the goal line to close out first period scoring. Jeff Winchester also notched an assist on the Collins tally.
Arizona continued to outplay the Ice Bats early in the second period as Kolanos added to his rookie-leading count with a goal just 38 seconds in for a 5-1 lead. Defensemen David Schlemko and Dan Laperriere teamed up to collect assists on the Sundogs' third powerplay tally. At the 7:30 mark, Jonathan Bernier scored his first professional goal as Chris Greene and Rob Lehtinen worked to find tough defenseman at the top of the circle to give Arizona a commanding 6-1 advantage. Fans would see Arizona push the score to 7-1 two-and-a-half minutes later as Patrick Levesque converted for the Sundogs' fourth goal with the man advantage. Schlemko and Collins assisted on the play.
Arizona's powerplay unit continued to fire on all cylinders in the third as veteran defenseman Dan Laperriere gathered his club's fifth goal with the man advantage on set-up passes by Dusty Collins and David Schlemko for their second and fourth points in the contests respectively. With 5:16 to play, Austin's John Ronan grabbed an unassisted marker off a faceoff, roofing the puck over Gallant for the Ice Bats' second tally. Adding a third goal before the end of regulation was John Neal with assists going to Ronan and Tessier.
Arizona netminder Andrew Gallant appeared in net for the ninth time this season and stopped 23 of 26 shots to improve to 7-2-0 on the season. Miguel Beaudry deflected 39 of 47 shots to fall to 1-7-0 on the year. Arizona converted on 5-of-8 powerplay chances while holding Austin to a 2-for-7 mark.
After winning their third-straight overall and fourth-straight at Tim's Toyota Center, the Sundogs now head to the road for seven games before returning home on Wednesday, Dec. 19. Next up for Arizona is the Rocky Mountain Rage on Friday, Nov. 30. Game time is set for 7:05pm and can be heard live on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
