Bees come back to beat Rayz 6-4

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees scored five third period goals to come from behind and beat the Corpus Christi Rayz 6-4 at the American Bank Center on Saturday Night. The Rayz suffered their sixth straight loss, and fifth in a row where they outshot and shot even with their opposition. The Rayz dropped to 2-11-1 on the year and 1-4 against Rio Grande Valley despite playing well and leading for the majority of the game. Corpus Christi will remain home on Sunday at 3:05pm when the New Mexico Scorpions come to town on Caller-Times Family Day. Tickets are on sale now. Corpus Christi put together a solid opening frame in their first at home in three weeks. The Rayz limited Rio Grande's chances in the opening frame and capitalized on their own. Justin Quenneville got the scoring started when he was left untouched at the bottom of the slot and shot a Brent Howarth pass through Jeff Van Nynatten and into the net at 2:46. The Rayz then made it 2-0 when Derek Smith scored his first pro goal on a rush down the left win at 13:00. Kevin Watters set up the goal with a drop pass just inside the blue line for his fourth straight game with a point. The Rayz outshot the Bees 9-5 in the first period and took a 2-0 lead into the second period.

The Killer Bees struck late in the second period to get on the board and make the score 2-1. At 19:32 Rob Voltera slapped his own rebound past Jason Tapp from the right circle for his eighth goal of the season and cut the Rayz lead in half. The Killer Bees outshot the Rayz 17-14 in the second period.

In the third period, Rio Grande Valley scored five goals, including four unanswered to pull off the comeback and beat the Rayz. The Bees tied it early in the third when Josh Bonar scored at 2:54. The Rayz looked to recapture the game with two straight goals from Kevin Watters at 3:43 and Howarth at 7:02, but then the Bees exploded for the final four. Mark O'Leary scored at 7:36. Dennis Maxwell then tied the score at 4-4 with a tally at 9:54. The Rayz had a two-man advantage late in the third period with a chance to recapture the lead but could not find the back of the net. On an ensuing Bees man advantage, Rio Grande Valley took their first lead of the night at 17:36. Adam Edinger redirected a puck from just outside the crease that went through the legs of Tapp and went on as the eventual game winner. Maxwell sealed the game with an empty net goal at 19:21. The Rayz outshot the Bees 17-11 in the final frame.

Tapp made 27 saves on 32 shots and fell to 2-9-1 taking the loss. Van Nynatten earned the win and improved to 4-3-2 turning aside 36 of 40 shots. The Rayz went 1-6 on the power play and the Bees were 1-5. The Rayz outshot the Bees 40-33.

Corpus Christi remains home for a Sunday afternoon showdown with the New Mexico Scorpions. It's Caller-Times Family Day at 3:05pm and kids 12 and under receive free tickets with a full paying adult - limit two kids per adult.
