Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs and Austin Ice Bats faced off Friday night at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley for the second of three straight games in Arizona. The Sundogs used a three-goal, 22-shot performance in the second period to secure a 5-2 win and sole possession of first place in the Southwest Division. Tyler Redenbach collected a goal and assist in the win to extend his league-high scoring streak to 13 games, having tallied at least a point in every game for Arizona this season. The Regina, Saskatchewan native has tallied 26 points over that span and his 22 assists are tops in the CHL.
The first period Friday night looked much like the opening frame on Wednesday as both clubs played a well-disciplined 20 minutes with the Ice Bats receiving just four total penalty minutes in the period. Austin tallied late in the stanza to take a 1-0 lead into the dressing room as Zech Klann took a pass off the stick of Brendan Cook and found the back of the net past Sundogs netminder Andrew Gallant.
Opposite the first, the beginning of the second period resembled the end of Wednesday night's game as two separate fights occurred just 1:15 into the frame. Karl Sellan and Jason Tessier traded punches while Dusty Collins and Stuart Kerr exchanged blows. All four players were slapped with five-minute majors and Collins and Kerr also received game misconducts for their altercation. Arizona tallied three goals on 22 shots in a period dominated by the home club. Just past the period's halfway point, CHL rookie scoring leader Mark Kolanos took a pass from Jon Landry and gained the offensive zone to collect his ninth goal of the year, tying the game at 1-1. With 4:43 to play in the second, defenseman Chris Bartolone took advantage of a crowd in front of the Ice Bats net and fired a low shot from the point that snuck through Austin netminder Miroslav Kopriva. Jason Visser and Patrick Levesque assisted on the play. With the assist, Visser continues his point-a-game average with ten points through his first ten games this season. The Sundogs pushed the score to 3-1 at the 17:05 mark as rookie forward Michael Bartlett grabbed his second goal in as many games with David Schlemko and Chris Greene tallying helpers on the play.
Twenty-seven seconds into the third period, Austin cut the Sundogs' lead back to one as John Ronan fed Brendan Cook as he skated down the side boards and beat Gallant near side for his second point of the night. Arizona went on a 5-on-3 powerplay for 1:20 following charging and bench minor penalties to the Ice Bats at 13:16 of the period. Sixteen seconds later, forward Karl Sellan deflected a Tyler Redenbach one-timer into the net to regain a two-goal lead. With the assist, Redenbach extends his consecutive-game point streak to 13 games. Bartolone also assisted on the powerplay goal for his second point of the night. With three seconds remaining, an empty net for Austin and defenseman Jon Landry in the penalty box for Arizona, Redenbach took a shot off a faceoff in the neutral zone that found its way into the net with just one second remaining for the Sundogs' first shorthanded goal of the year. Rob Lehtinen and Jason Visser collected assists on the shorthanded goal to close out scoring in the game.
Andrew Gallant stopped 29 of 31 shots to improve to 6-2-0 on the season while Miroslav Kopriva fell to 2-6-0 on the season, deflecting 37 of 41 shots faced. The Sundogs finished 1-for-6 with the man advantage while holding the Ice Bats scoreless on four powerplay chances. With the win, Arizona improves to 10-4-1 for 21 points and sole possession of first place in the Southwest Division, one point ahead of the Odessa Jackalopes.
The two clubs close out their three-game series tomorrow night at Tim's Toyota Center. Game time is set for 7:05pm. Tickets are available by phone at 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), on the internet at www.gettix.net and in person at the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office.
