Rapid City Rush News Release
(Allen, TX) - With a game against the Allen Americans, the Rapid City Rush completed their first trip to the Lone Star State on Saturday night. Despite a hat trick by Jesse Schultz, the Rush came up just short in a wild finish at the Allen Events Center, falling by a 5-4 final. The team is back on home ice on Tuesday night against the Wichita Thunder, and tickets are available 24-hours a day at www.gotmine.com.
The teams exchanged goals back and forth in the opening period, beginning with Anthony Maiani's 10th of the season 5:50 into the first. The Rush responded midway through the frame when Damian Surma set up Scott Wray and Jesse Schultz on a 2-on-1chance, and Schultz buried a wrist shot to the top-right corner. With six minutes remaining in the period, Alec Martinez scored his first goal as a member of the Americans, blasting in a slapshot from the left point to regain the lead for Allen. However, the lead last just two minutes before a turnover by Martinez set Schultz off on a breakaway, and the veteran buried another wrist shot over the glove of Aaron Dell.
Capitalizing on another Allen turnover, Jared Brown found a wide open Schultz at the bottom of the left circle, completing the hat trick for the veteran winger and giving Rapid City their first lead of the game at 3:36 of the second. After numerous opportunities, the Rush finally doubled their lead with less than three minutes to go on a goal from Rusty Masters, his 6th of the season.
Just 28 seconds into the final period, Jason Deitsch potted a powerplay goal to cut the lead and make it a 4-3 game. Anthony Maiani potted his second of the game at the 13:53 mark of the third after a scramble at the front of the Rush net, tying the game at 4-4. Just 1:13 later, the Americans received the game-winner from Jamie Schaafsma to secure the 5-4 win.
The game featured numerous fisticuffs and a combined 104 penalty minutes between the two squads.
