Late Surge in the Third Not Enough

Arizona Sundogs News Release


Prescott Valley, AZ - The Arizona Sundogs were unable to bounce back despite their surge late in the third period, handing the Bloomington Blaze a 6-3 win at the US Cellular Coliseum Saturday night.

The Blaze wasted no time tonight registering a goal, 14 seconds into the opening period with a shot from Steve Makway . Two minutes later they put their second goal past Arizona goalie David Brown extending their lead. 3:26 into the first period and gloves were dropped as Adam Smyth, Jesse Dudas and Makway came to blows in front of the Sundogs' bench. They each received a two minute roughing minor and Smyth was accessed an additional two minutes for interference. Arizona picked up two power play opportunities both resulting from penalties called on Granbois, though the Sundogs were unable to capitalize on the man advantage.

David Gilbert was credited with Bloomington's third goal just 4:06 into the second frame. Less than 90 seconds later the Blaze lit the lamp again this time with a goal from Dudas . Arizona's head coach David Lohrei pulled netminder David Brown and sent in Adam Russo, who finished the night for the Sundogs.

Arizona rallied back in the final period tallying three goals. Chad Nehring broke the draught 2:37 into the period when he found the back of the net with assists from Matt Register and Derek LeBlanc. Seven minutes later Sundogs Captain, Jason Morgan scored and Nehring came back with 7:23 left in regulation to close the gap. Blaze collected two additional goals in the third period from Sebastien Trudeau and Dudas with his second goal of the night, pushing the Blaze's lead to 6-3.

Bloomington outshot Arizona 34-31. Both goaltenders Brown and Russo skated away with 14 saves in net tonight. Neither team scored on the power play, Arizona was 0-3 and Bloomington was 0-2.

Arizona concluded their five game series against Bloomington, earning six of eight points during their run. The Sundogs will visit the Quad City Mallards on Tuesday, January 8, 2012 in their first match-up of the season before returning to Prescott Valley where they will host the Denver Cutthroats in a two-game set.
