Cutthroats Fall to Mavericks in Marathon Finish, 2-1

INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Denver Cutthroats scored late in the third period but the Missouri Mavericks held on in the shootout to pick up a 2-1 win on Saturday night at the Independence Events Center in front of a sold out crowd.

The Mavs won 4-3 in the shootout that went eight rounds; the longest Denver had been a part of this season. A.J. Gale, Troy Schwab and Luke Fulghum scored for the Cutthroats in the shootout. Missouri's Colt King's shootout tally was the deciding goal.

Denver (18-12-4) and Missouri (18-11-4) are now tied for third in the Central Hockey League standings with 40 points each.

The Cutthroats trailed the Mavericks 1-0 going into the third period, but Mike Towns scored with 7:05 remaining to tie the game for the Fish. Towns scored his first of the season while being wide open in front of the net. Fulghum brought the puck into the Missouri zone and tangled up a couple of Mavs players, which allowed Towns to get free in front. Joel Chouinard also assisted on the goal.

Trevor Kell scored the first goal of the game for Missouri with 4:39 remaining in the first period. John-Scott Dickson and Colt King added the assists.

After only two penalties in the first period, things got heated up in the second with 56 penalty minutes being issued in the stanza. Early in the period Missouri had a 5-on-3 power play for almost a full two minutes, but the Cutthroats defense held strong and killed off both infractions.

Missouri had a chance to win the game after getting another power play with 1:23 left in regulation, but Kent Patterson and the Denver defense did enough to force overtime. Patterson made 39 saves in the contest with 17 of them coming in the second period.

The Mavs finished 0-for-4 on the power play while the Fish were scoreless on their three man-advantage opportunities.

Mike Clemente picked up the win after making 20 saves for Missouri, who outshot Denver 41-21.

Cutthroats goaltender Kieran Millan was reassigned from the American Hockey League's Lake Erie Monsters earlier on Saturday. Millan appeared in his first career game on Saturday night in a 4-0 loss. He is scheduled to join the Cutthroats this week.

Denver continues their road trip this week with their final visit to the desert for a weekend set against the Arizona Sundogs. Friday's game is set for a 7:05 PM MST start.
