BLOOMINGTON - The Bloomington Blaze, fueled by Mid-Illini Credit Union, turned the tables on the Arizona Sundogs with a quick start for a 6-3 win on Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
The Blaze started with an early score as Steve Makway blistered a slap shot from the left point after Jon Booras had dug the puck away from Arizona goalie David Brown behind the Sundogs net, with the second assist going to Jesse Dudas. The Blaze made it 2-0 just 2:15 into the game on a rebound goal from Ryan Palmer after a wraparound attempt by Sebastien Trudeau also assisted by Tysen Dowzak.
David Gilbert gave the Blaze a 3-0 lead with 15:54 left in the second period from the right circle on a feed from Jay Barriball and Aaron Dawson. The lead built to 4-0 with 14:33 remaining in the middle period when Jesse Dudas connected from the left wing on assists from Makway and Trudeau.
The Blaze extended the lead to 5-0 on a running wrist shot from the left circle by Trudeau with 17:49 left in the third period, assisted by Travis Granbois and Ryan Palmer. The Sundogs entered the scoring column just 26 seconds later on a goal by Chad Nehring on assists by Matt Register and Derek LeBlanc. Arizona cut the deficit to 5-2 with 10:46 remaining when Jason Morgan dove and rolled in a rebound with assists given to Karl Linden and Chad Langlais. Nehring scored into an open net when the puck rolled in front of the Blaze goal while it was being played by Bloomington goalie Pier-Olivier Pelletier with 7:23 left, but the Blaze increased the lead to 6-3 on a wrister from Dudas from the right circle assisted by Trudeau and Dan Barczuk.
Pier-Olivier Pelletier earned the win in goal with 28 saves while starting Sundogs goalie David Brown took the loss with 14 saves. No power play goals were scored on three Bloomington chances and two for the Sundogs.
The cops won the annual Guns and Hoses game between local police and firefighters 4-3 on Saturday afternoon behind four goals from Travis Waite, including the game-winner with 1:34 remaining in regulation. Brian Day led the firefighters with two goals and an assist. The game and the special jerseys worn by the Blaze that were auctioned afterwards benefitted Special Olympics Illinois, which is headquartered in Bloomington-Normal.
