
Schoeninger tosses four-hit gem as Kernels win 5-0

Kernels starter Tim Schoeninger (3-0) tossed a complete game, 4-hit shutout as the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Great Lakes Loons, 5-0, Monday night at the Dow Diamond in Midland, MI.
The win improves the Kernels record to 8-6 and snaps a two-game losing streak. Great Lakes falls to 6-11.
Schoeninger's shut out is only the third complete game in the Midwest League this season and the first shutout for the Kernels in 2007. He allowed only four hits over the nine innings and struck out eight with no walks.
P.J. Phillips paced the Kernels offense going 2-3 with a triple and 2 RBI. Matt Sweeney returned to the starting lineup and went 1-4, extending his hitting streak to a team-high 11 games.
Ryan Mount and Marco Albano each had an RBI and Hank Conger had two hits and two runs scored.
The Kernels will go for the series split on Tuesday night as Trevor Bell (0-2) starts for the Kernels as game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
After an off day on Wednesday, the Kernels open a six game homestand on Thursday as they host Lansing for four games and then Clinton for two. Tickets for the six game series can be purchased through the Kernels on-line store at www.kernels.com
