Great Lakes Loons News Release

The Great Lakes Loons rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning off reliever Robert Romero to defeat the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 2-1, in front of a frenzied crowd at Dow Diamond.

The Loons (7-11) were held scoreless through the first eight frames by Doug Brandt, Pedro Herrera, Barrett Browning and Warner Madrigal. Brandt pitched the first four innings, making an emergency start after scheduled starter Trevor Bell was scratched with a left hip injury suffered while warming up in the bullpen. Romero (0-1) entered the game in the ninth and allowed an infield single to Francisco Lizarraga and a soft line drive into left by Matt Berezay. A passed ball sent runners to second and third. Josh Bell followed with a single to left, past a drawn-in infield, scoring Lizarraga and tying the score at 1-1. Eduardo Perez followed and lifted a sacrifice fly to center scoring Berezay with the winning run. Center fielder Peter Bourjos dropped the ball in his haste to throw to the plate and was charged with an error.

Loons starter Clayton Kershaw set a career high with 12 strikeouts through six innings. Miguel Sanfler followed with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. Garrett White (1-0) recorded the victory with 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief work.

The Kernels (8-7) scored their lone run in the second on a solo homerun by Mark Trumbo off of Kershaw.

The Loons return to action Thursday in Clinton, Iowa, against the LumberKings. Game time Thursday is 7:00pm. The Loons' next home game at Dow Diamond is Friday, May 4 against the Beloit Snappers. The first 3,500 fans in attendance receive a commemorative Loons team photo. Game time on May 4 is 7:05. Tickets are still available at Loons.com, by calling 989-837-BALL or visiting the Loons' ticket office at Dow Diamond during business hours.
