Scarbery shuts out Saltdogs, 4-0

Sioux Falls, SD - Chad Scarbery and Matt Montgomery combined to pitch the Sioux Falls Canaries (17-26) to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs (29-14). Scarbery pitched 8.1 shutout innings of four-hit six-strikeout baseball, and Matt Montgomery cleaned up the final two outs to close out the win.

Chad Hermansen singled to get on base with two outs in the home half of the first inning. Hermansen took second on a passed ball and stole third base as Abner Arroyo drew a walk. Bubba Smith followed with a single to right field scoring Hermansen and giving the Canaries a 1-0 lead.

The Canaries broadened their lead in the third inning. John Schmitz hit his first homer of the season, a solo shot, to put the Canaries ahead 2-0.

In the seventh inning Ralph Santana singled and stole second base. The stolen base was Santana's 37th of the season, a new Canaries record.

The Birds got a couple insurance runs in the eighth. Bubba Smith led off the inning with his eighth homer of the season to give the Canaries a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning Angelo Fermin walked and stole second base. Fermin came around to score on a single by Kenta Suzumegano for the 4-0 final.

Scarbery (1-1) picked up the win, Roger Lincoln (5-5) suffered the loss, and Matt Montgomery picked up his ninth save of the season.

The teams will meet again on Tuesday night at the Birdcage where it will be the Canaries "Home Run King Salute" presented by Qwest. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
