Kirsten no hits El Paso

August 21, 2006 - American Association (AA)
Fort Worth Cats News Release

Cats' left-hander Joel Kirsten Monday night pitched the first no-hitter in modern Cats' history as Fort Worth downed El Paso 2-0 at LaGrave Field.

Kirsten faced just two batters above the minimum, permitting a walk in the fourth inning and hitting a batter to start the eighth. He struck out a season-high 11 as he notched his second complete game of the year and his seventh win on the season.

With the victory, the Cats clinched at least a tie for a playoff spot in the American Association South as they reduced their magic number to one.

Fort Worth got all the offense it needed in the fourth inning when Tony Mota singled home Terence Green and later scored in the inning on a wild pitch.

Diablos' starter Robbie Wachman (4-3) took the loss as he permitted two runs on eight hits in seven innings pitched.

In the ninth inning with the Cats leading 2-0, Kirsten struck out the first batter, got the leadoff man Josh Fulton to ground back to the mound before Kory Drew bounced to second to end the game.

As the final out was recorded, Kirsten's teammates stormed the field and mobbed the lefty on the hill. It was the first no-hitter thrown in the American Association this year.

The series concludes Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Kevin Hull (7-3) will pitch for the Cats and Andy Torres (8-5) goes for El Paso.
