Savannah Slugger Keeps Legends from "Holden On" in Pitcher's Duel
August 13, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
A game that was at one point tenuously in Lexington's grasp slipped away in the late innings Monday evening as the Legends fell to the Sand Gnats, 3-1 at Applebee's Park. Center fielder Joe Holden hit a two-run blast in the top of the ninth to steal the win from the home team.
The contest featured two stellar pitching performances by starters Corey Bass and Jeremy Mizell. After six innings, the game was still a scoreless tie. Each team had only once advanced a runner as far as third base.
Lexington broke the deadlock with a run in the seventh. Jhon Florentino hit a grounder through the left side of the infield for a single and advanced to second on pinch hitter Jordan Parraz's grounder to short. With two out, Greg Buchanan delivered an RBI single by sneaking a grounder between the middle infielders and into center. Florentino beat the throw to the plate with a sweeping slide, and the Legends had the game's first lead.
For a short moment, it looked as if Mizell would be a hard-luck loser after pitching seven innings and allowing only one run, but the visitors quickly remedied that injustice. They loaded the bases with no one out against reliever Chad Wagler on a pair of singles and a walk. Then D.J. Wabick hit a fly toward the bullpen in left. Jimmy Van Ostrand glided over to make the catch in foul territory, but Jonathan Santos broke for home as soon as he received the ball. Van Ostrand made a strong throw that just nabbed the runner at the plate, but Ralphie Henriquez dropped the ball, allowing the tying run to score.
In the ninth, Wagler (8-6) yielded the go-ahead runs on Holden's Johnson. Those proved to be the game-winning RBIs, as closer Ryan Meyers struck out the side in order in the bottom half of the inning to net his 13th save.
Wasted were six shutout innings by Bass, who delivered a six strikeout, one walk performance. Jeramy Simmons (3-0) got the win for Savannah, pitching a perfect eighth before the winning runs crossed the plate.
Tomorrow evening, David Qualben (9-7, 3.97) will battle Jonathan Castillo (4-3, 4.02) on Quarter Hot Dog Night, beginning at 7:05 p.m.
