Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - For the first time since May 25th, Brian Steinocher (3-11) took the mound and left the game a winner. The right-hander scattered eight hits over 7.0 innings, surrendering just two runs as the Greenville Drive (24-27, 53-67) handed the visiting Lakewood BlueClaws (25-24, 58-56) a 4-2 loss.
The Drive took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as designated hitter Mike Jones tripled home Lars Anderson. The lead would not last long however, as the BlueClaws plated single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to take their only lead of the game.
Greg Milner hit a one-out homer in the fourth, and Quintin Berry singled home a run an inning later with two outs. Doug Morales, who doubled earlier in the inning, scored on Berry's base hit.
The Drive offense would reward Steinocher's performance, scoring runs in three of the final four innings to secure the victory. Aaron Reza, who joined the Drive earlier in the day from Lowell, tied the game in the fifth when Jones scored on his groundout.
An inning later the Drive took a lead they would not relinquish. Josh Reddick singled, stole second, and scored as Paul Smyth followed with a single down the right-field line. Jones would provide the icing on the cake in the bottom of the eighth, singling home his second RBI of the night.
Reliever Chris Province shutdown the BlueClaws offense in the final two innings, issuing just one walk and fanning one to earn his second save of the season. Darren Byrd (7-10) took the tough-luck loss for the BlueClaws, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks.
The Drive will look to take a 3-0 advantage in the four-game series Tuesday night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM at West End Field. Southpaw Ryan Phillips will toe the rubber for Greenville as Lakewood counters with fellow lefty Antonio Bastardo.
Tuesday will also mark the seventh game of the Drive's "Crazy 8," as they celebrate the City of Greenville's 176th birthday with "Green Day." All fans attending the game are encouraged to wear green to help celebrate Greenville's 176th birthday. The Drive will be doing their part as they don their special green uniforms for this game.
In addition, the first 3,000 fans will receive commemorative "Green Day" t-shirts and the Drive will honor Lillian Brock Flemming and Xanthene Norris in recognition for the role they have played in making Greenville the great city it is today. Following the game the Mighty McFly will perform in the Spinx 500 Club.
