Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
MEXICO CITY, MX - The Santa Cruz Warriors (12-11) fell to the Mexico City Capitanes (12-10), 127-104, on Sunday afternoon at Mexico City Arena in the first game of their back-to-back series.
Two-way center Usman Garuba led the Warriors with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. Two-way guard Pat Spencer and forward Javonte Green came off the bench to contribute 15 points and five rebounds each. Guard Donovan Williams added 14 points and five rebounds in the road loss.
The Capitanes were led by forward Juan Toscano-Anderson with 23 points and five rebounds, followed closely by guard Luke Martinez with 21 points. Forward Louis King, guard Iverson Molinar, and forward Maozinha Pereira combined for 44 points off the bench, and forward Kenneth Faried notched 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Both teams were evenly matched on offense to open the contest, with neither team able to move ahead by more than four points before a made free throw gave Mexico City a slim 29-28 lead at the end of the first quarter. A brief Capitanes run at the start of the second frame gave Mexico City a six-point lead before a Kendric Davis Euro step finish tied the score at 43 with 6:14 remaining in the period. Back-to-back three-pointers from Toscano-Anderson allowed Mexico City to take a 13-point lead with time expiring, and the Warriors entered the break trailing 65-52.
The Sea Dubs kicked off the second half with back-to-back transition dunks and a Garuba three-pointer to go on a 9-0 offensive run. However, a flurry of shots from behind the arc, courtesy of Toscano-Anderson and Martinez, allowed Mexico City to extend their lead, and the Capitanes ended the third quarter with a 100-81 advantage. The Warriors were unable to close the gap in the final frame, and the Capitanes managed to come away with the 127-104 win.
The Santa Cruz Warriors will once again face the Mexico City Capitanes in the second game of their back-to-back series on Monday, March 4 at 6 p.m. (PT) before traveling to Austin for the final stop of their five-game road trip. The Sea Dubs return to the Bay Area on Sunday, March 10 to host the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors, at 12:30 p.m. (PT).
