Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, CA - The Santa Cruz Warriors (30-14) suffered their first road loss against the Memphis Hustle (24-21) tonight at the Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi, 109-94. The Sea Dubs now fall to 4-2 all time against the Hustle, and took their first defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies' NBA G League affiliate this season.
Warriors guard Kendrick Nunn led his team with 19 points tonight off the bench tonight, and backcourt partner Darius Morris secured 17 points six rebounds and three assists. Center Deyonta Davis logged 14 points on 7-of-11 from the field (63.6 percent shooting) with seven rebounds and two blocks while guard Will Cherry added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists off the bench.
The well-rounded Hustle offense featured all five starters scoring in double figures tonight, led by two-way guard Yuta Watanabe's 17 points and 11 rebounds. Frontcourt partners Julian Washburn (15 points 10 rebounds) and Doral Moore (13 points, 10 rebounds) gave the Hustle three double-double performers tonight. Guard Dusty Hannahs added 17 points in 25 minutes off the bench, including a personal 8-0 run in the first quarter.
With the scored tied at 20-20 in the first quarter, Hannah's eight-point run in just 76 seconds helped the Hustle to a 30-25 lead at the first quarter break, a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the evening. Davis and Nunn combined to score 15 of Santa Cruz's 19 points in the second quarter, but Memphis built a 16-point halftime lead, 60-44, by shooting 50.0 percent from the field (10-of-20 FG) and holding Santa Cruz to 31.8 percent shooting.
The Hustle opened up the second half on a 12-4 run to build a game-high 24-point advantage in the third quarter. Santa Cruz hit five three pointers in the second half, three coming from guard Michael Gbinije, to help Santa Cruz bring their deficit to single digits, 92-83 early in the fourth quarter. However, the Hustle's 15-8 rebounding advantage in the fourth quarter, including a 6-to-1 in offensive rebounding and a 7-0 edge in second chance points, proved the difference as Memphis secured a win and their standing in the Western Conference Playoff chase.
The playoff-bound Santa Cruz Warriors will now return to Kaiser Permanente Arena on Wednesday, March 13 to host the Greensboro Swarm (22-21) for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off (NBC Sports Bay Area Plus). The first 1,500 fans in attendance that evening will receive a Baron Davis bobblehead.
