Sanford Mainers Drop Pitchers Duel

June 17, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

After winning the last two games to recover from starting the season 0-3, the Mainers took to the road to take on the Vermont Mountaineers. The momentum was in the right direction for the Moose, but what went down between both teams was different than most would have expected as the Mountaineers went on to win only 1-0.

The starting pitchers for both teams were the reason the result of this game turned out the way it was. Conor Krauss made his second start for the Mainers this season after recording a no decision against the Plymouth Pilgrims back on June 8th. Vermont's Cameron Sorgie also took the hill for his second time, but had a 1-0 record entering the game.

Both Krauss and Sorgie left the game with borderline identical line scores. Both went seven innings striking out seven and allowing no runs. The only difference maker was the hit column in which Krauss allowed three hits to Sorgie's one.

Sorgie had a perfect game until the sixth inning when Nate LaPointe singled through the left side and became the Mainers first base runner, but was quickly erased when the slippery infield dirt worked against him on a throw down to first from catcher Zach Soria.

The Mountaineers were the first to have a chance at scoring the game's first run when Soria led off the sixth inning getting hit by a pitch. After being pinch ran for, Thomas Roulis singled advancing pinch runner Pat Weise up to second. Bret Dennis then dropped down a sacrifice bunt for the first out of the inning, pushing both runners into scoring position.

Krauss battled back and got AJ Ryan to strike out swinging and Mike Vigliarolo to pop up to second to end the inning.

The Mainers threatened in the eighth when they loaded the bases with only one out. Anthony Papio started things off with a one out single to left and was followed by a four-pitch walk to Nic Wilson. LaPointe then hit a line drive up the middle that was knocked down by Roulis, but his recovery resulted in over throwing second base causing everyone to be safe.

During the next at bat, John Howell grounded in to the 6-3 double play to end the threat.

It was the bottom half the eighth that proved to be the game winning inning for the Mountaineers and they did it all with two outs. Roulis tripled to center after Sam Balzano misjudged a line drive. Dennis then hit a hard ground ball to short that Howell was unable to come up with cleanly on the backhand resulting in a late throw to first that scored Roulis. The Mainers committed another error in the inning, but the one run proved to be the difference maker.

Travis Landry recorded the loss in relief for the Mainers while Zach Grossfeld received the win in relief.

The Mainers return home tomorrow to face the New Bedford Bay Sox. Nick Poore is expected to make his first start and appearance in a Mainers uniform. Game time slated for 6:30pm.
