New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

For the first time this season the Bay Sox scored before their opponent, but ended up with another game in the lost column Monday night at Goodall Park.

For the second game in a row the Bay Sox lost by one run, this time 4-3 to the Sanford Mainers

The Mainers put a three-spot on the board and took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning off of Bay Sox starter Sam Dodge (Harvard).

Jake Thomas (Binghamton) led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. A John Howell (Binghamton) one-out double to left-center scored Thomas and tied the game at one. Back-to-back infield singles scored Howell and an Anthony Papio (Maryland) double, that one-hopped the left field wall, made it 3-1.

The Mainers added the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning off of New Bedford reliever Graig Weber (Bradley). Weber got the first two outs of the inning before walking two and giving up a single to load the bases. A bases loaded walk to Papio made it 4-1 Mainers.

New Bedford scored first in the bottom of the second inning before losing the lead.

Max Nogay (West Virginia) led off the second inning with a bunt down the third base line. A throwing error by the Sanford Mainers third baseman Mike Friel (Hofstra) allowed Nogay to reach second. A Lane Richards (Notre Dame) groundout to second scored Nogay to make it 1-0.

In the top of the sixth, the Bay Sox started yet another comeback attempt, something they have done in almost every game this season.

Back-to-back-to-back singles by Carl Anderson (Bryant), Ryan Plourde (Fairfield) and Chris Shaw (RBI) (Boston College) made it a 2-run deficit for New Bedford. With one out and runners on first and third, an Andrew Dundon (Marshall) ground ball scored Plourde to make it a 4-3 ballgame. Dundon was safe at first on the fielder's choice.

The Bay Sox had a chance to tie the game in the top of the 7th when Christian Venditti (Georgetown) led off the inning with a leadoff double down the left field line. Mainers reliever Stephen Fortuna (SNHU) got the next two Bay Sox batters to pop-up before Anderson got an infield single to put runners on first and third. Fortuna retired Plourde on a lineout to center to end the inning and keep the Mainers one run lead.

The Bay Sox had the tying run on second base with one out in the top of the ninth but stranded him there to lose 4-3.
