Newport Gulls News Release
Newport, R.I. - The red-hot Laconia Muskrats pitching silenced the bats of the Newport Gulls in an Eastern Division match-up as the Muskrats earned a 7-1 win over the Gulls at Cardines Field on Monday, June 17.
Muskrat starting pitcher, Evan Phillips, a freshman out of the University of North Carolina - Willmington held the Gulls to one run on two hits and striking out six over four and two thirds innings of work.
Similar to previous home contests for Newport, the Muskrats would strike first and early. Laconia picked up two runs as a result of Gulls infield throwing errors in the first inning.
Milan Mantle, a junior out of the University of Rhode Island, made his second appearance and first start for the Gulls this season lasting only three innings, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out two.
The Muskrat bats would begin to quiet themselves as Eric Stone, a right handed reliever out of Boston College, would strand a pair of runners in only an inning of work for the Gulls. The Eagle would leave with injury to be relieved by Barry University junior, Joe Iorio.
Iorio, allowed just two hits over the next two innings, but would be pulled in the seventh inning as additional Gulls fielding errors would put the Muskrats in scoring position.
The errors would come back to haut the Gulls as Laconia catcher, Carter White, looped a double to left field. White, the junior Tiger out of the University of Memphis, went 2-for-3 on the night with a pair of RBIs breaking the game open to extend the Muskrat lead to six.
With the loss, the Newport Gulls fall to 3-3 overall, trailing the Laconia Muskrats in the Eastern Division, who improve to 5-1 overall on the season.
The Gulls are on the road Tuesday, June 18 for their first trip of the year to Fitch Field in Mystic for a divisional match-up against the 5-1 Schooners. The first place Schooners will send Jeffrey Stoddard (0-0, 3.85 ERA) to the mound to square off against Gulls southpaw, Taylor Guilbeau (0-0, 0.00 ERA) getting his first start of the season for Newport.
Since moving to Newport in 2001, the Gulls have captured the New England Collegiate Baseball League championship, the Fay Vincent Sr. Cup, an NECBL-record five times, and in 2012 were named the No. 1 summer collegiate team in the country by Perfect Game USA in Perfect Game's
Top 50 final rankings, capping a record-breaking season by Newport and marking the first time ever that an NECBL franchise has been ranked No. 1 nationally.
The Gulls, which attract more than 50,000 fans annually to historic Cardines Field in Newport, recruit players from the top college baseball programs in the country, and to date have sent six alumni to Major League Baseball teams, and over 150 players to professional baseball teams ranging from Independent leagues to Triple-A.
