Sanford Mainers Defeat New Bedford

On Sunday night the Sanford Mainers dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 game to the Vermont Mountaineers, so they looked to rebound at home against the New Bedford Bay Sox.

Coming into the game the Bay Sox had not scored first in any of their seven games, but they were able to do it against the Mainers.

Nick Poore got the start for the Mainers making it his first appearance this summer. In the top of the second, Max Nogay led things off for the Bay Sox reaching first safely when third baseman Mike Friel overthrew Nic Wilson at first allowing Nogay to advance to second. Poore got the next two hitters to ground out, but Nogay came into score the game's first run on the second out.

The Mainers answered in the bottom half of the fourth. Jake Thomas led off with a walk and then stole second. Friel grounded out to second allowing Thomas to advance to third. John Howell doubled to center that scored Thomas to tie the game.

Troy Black continued his success at the plate with a bunt single. With runners at the corners, Will Cooper hit a soft ground ball down the third baseline that scored Howell. Cooper came around to score later in the inning on a double to left by Anthony Papio.

The Mainers added another run in the fifth, but the Bay Sox rallied in the sixth. Carl Anderson led off with a single to left and was followed by a single by Ryan Plourde and Christopher Shaw. Shaw's single scored Anderson. With runners at the corners and one out, Andrew Dundon grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Plourde.

That was all the Bay Sox were able to manufacture. They did threaten again in the in the seventh, but reliever Stephen Fortuna worked himself out of a jam.

Nick Poore picks up his first win this season while Sam Dodge collects the loss for the Bay Sox. Michael Gomez records his first save on the year.

The Mainers improve to 3-4 on the season. They will travel on the road tomorrow to face the Keene Swamp Bats. Game time slated for 6:30pm. Evan Hill is expected to make his second start for the Moose.
