Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - San Diego Padres catcher Tim Federowicz is scheduled to rehab with the TinCaps at Parkview Field this week, beginning Sunday.
Federowicz (pronounced: FED-er-oh-vich) tore the meniscus in his right knee during Spring Training and had surgery in March. He caught a simulated bullpen for San Diego on Saturday afternoon in Texas, where the Padres are playing the Rangers, and flew to Fort Wayne afterward.
This marks the first time in Fort Wayne history that a San Diego Padres player will rehab with the TinCaps at Parkview Field.
"We've been fortunate that the Padres have sent plenty of top prospects to Fort Wayne over the years," TinCaps President Mike Nutter said. "Now we're thankful that the Padres are bringing a big leaguer here for a few days. We hope fans enjoy the chance to see a major leaguer in a TinCaps uniform at Parkview Field."
Federowicz, 27, was acquired by the Padres in December from the Dodgers in a trade that also brought Matt Kemp to San Diego.
The University of North Carolina alum was drafted by the Red Sox in 2008 in the 7th round. He was traded by Boston to Los Angeles in 2011.
The catcher made his MLB debut with the Dodgers in September of 2011. After playing seven games with L.A. that year, Federowicz returned to the Dodgers for parts of the 2012, '13, and '14 seasons. In 89 career big league games, he has a .194 batting average with five home runs and 22 RBIs.
When healthy, Federowicz figures to be San Diego's No. 2 catcher behind Derek Norris. This week with the TinCaps, he's expected to catch and DH.
The TinCaps, who have won 15 of their last 21 games and enter Sunday a 1.2 game out of first place, are home at Parkview Field through Friday. Tickets for the homestand are available online at TinCapsTickets.com, by calling 260-482-6400, or by visiting the Parkview Field Ticket Office.
