Great Lakes Loons News Release
FORT WAYNE, INDIANA - Justin Chigbogu and Alex Santana each hit three-run home runs as the Loons jumped out to an early lead and won 8-3 over the Fort Wayne Tin Caps.
The Loons (45-41; 7-11) have won two in a row and draw even in the season series against Fort Wayne with their sixth win. The Tin Caps (43-43; 11-7) can still split the four-game series with a win in Monday's regular season series finale.
The Loons flew to an early lead in the first inning on Saturday and surpassed that feat with four runs off Fort Wayne starter Chris Huffman (L, 3-5) in the first on Sunday.
Overcast skies had no rainy effect on the Loons' bats as Alex Santana gave the Loons a 1-0 lead on a double to right center field. Justin Chigbogu continued to rake and hit his third home run of the series with a three-run bomb to left and put the Loons up 4-0.
Fort Wayne took a run back in the bottom of the first against Loons' righty starter Pablo Fernandez. The 25-year-old Cuban made his Loons' debut on Sunday and allowed an RBI double to Tim Federowicz, a former Dodger who became the first Major Leaguer to make a rehab appearance for the Tin Caps at Parkview Field.
Fernandez signed with the Dodgers on May 19 and is expected to climb quickly through the system. He finished his first start in Loons' uniform after four innings and allowed a run on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
The Loons opened up a six-run edge in the fifth when Santana went deep to left for the second three-run homer of the game. It was Santana's first home run since June 12 and made the score 7-1.
Righty Kevin Guzman (W, 5-7) took over for Fernandez on the hill as a piggyback starter. Guzman allowed two runs over two plus innings, but the Loons scratched an insurance run across in the ninth on a double steal that scored Alex Verdugo from third.
The Loons close the book against the Tin Caps on Monday at 7:05 p.m. from Parkview Field. Coverage starts at 6:35 on ESPN 100.9-FM. The Loons return to Dow Diamond on June 18 for Star Wars night against the Lansing Lugnuts at 7:05 p.m.
The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
