Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, Wisc. - The Snappers and Timber Rattlers combined for 20 hits, but the Snappers came out on top, clawing their way to a 6-5 victory.
Brett Graves started for the Snappers and got two quick outs in the top of the first inning, but the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were able to get on the board with a Dustin Demuth double and an RBI single from Carlos Leal. Elvis Rubio then grounded out to second base, and the Snappers found themselves in a hole early.
The Snappers didn't trail for long as Trent Gilbert came in to score on a wild pitch from Devin Williams after loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the first inning. The Wisconsin starter was able to avoid any more damage, and the game stayed tied 1-1 after one inning.
Beloit then untied the game in the bottom of the second inning after a Trent Gilbert sacrifice fly and led the rest of the way. The Timber Rattlers loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning, but Graves was able to work out of the jam, and the Snappers carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the inning. Wisconsin's defense didn't do them any favors after a throwing error from Demuth allowed Yairo Munoz to reach second base and James Harris brought him in with a single to right field. Gilbert then singled to bring in another run, and the Snappers led 4-1 after four innings.
Graves held the Timber Rattlers scoreless in the top of the fifth inning, and Justin Higley seemingly blew the game open with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the inning. Graves came back out for the top of the sixth inning, but ran into trouble when the Timber Rattlers strung together four straight hits and scored two runs. Kevin Johnson came on in relief of Graves and got two consecutive ground outs, but with the infield back, both outs scored a run. The Snappers saw their once-comfortable lead evaporate and led by a score of 6-5 after five and a half innings.
The Snappers threatened again in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Wisconsin pitcher Scott Lieser struck out Harris to stay within one run and Jose Torres came on to pitch for Beloit in the top of the eighth. He got through a clean inning and came back on to close the game for the Snappers. After a walk and a single, Raga caught Mitch Meyer stealing, and Torres got Gregory Munoz to ground out. Torres then struck out Brandon Diaz looking to end the game. Graves gets the win and goes to 8-3 on the season. Williams gets the loss to go to 2-6 and Torres notches his sixth save of the year.
The Beloit Snappers are 34-54 on the season and play the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers again tomorrow night at Pohlman Field at 7:00 PM. To buy tickets, stop by the office or call (608) 362-2272.
