San Diego Opens Five-Game Homestand; Looks For Fourth Straight Win

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls open up a crucial five-game homestand and look for their fourth straight win when they take on the red-hot, first-place Alaska Aces tonight at the Sports Arena.

SERIES HISTORY: The Gulls and Aces have met nine times so far this season with San Diego holding a 5-2-2 series edge. Tonight is the last head-to-head match-up of the regular season. San Diego and Alaska met 10 times last season with the Gulls holding a 6-3-1 edge. The Aces eliminated the Gulls in a three-game sweep during last season's Kelly Cup Playoffs.

San Diego owns the all-time series match-up, posting a 68-19-7 record against its West Division rival. The Gulls are 39-4-1 all-time against the Aces at the Sports Arena.

LAST HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING (DEC. 31 @ AK): Chris Minard netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner 4:27 into overtime, leading Alaska to a come-from-behind 5-4 win on New Year's Eve. The Gulls carried a 3-1 lead early in the third period, but the Aces scored three straight to go ahead 4-3. Brian Gornick, however, tied the game dramatically with just 7.3 seconds left in regulation.

GULLS UPDATE: The Gulls (31-22-6) enter the day sixth in the West Division, seven points behind the Fresno Falcons for the fourth and final playoff spot... They are one point back of the fifth-place Idaho Steelheads, who are idle today... San Diego has won three straight games for first the time since it ran off six consecutive wins in January... The Gulls are 19-5-3 at home, but just 12-17-3 on the road this season... They have outscored their opponents 104-73 at home, but have been outscored 101-73 on the road... The Blue and Orange are 10-11-2 in their last 23 games... Since the all-star break, they are 5-1-1 at home and 5-9-1 on the road (10-10-2 overall)...

OTHER NOTES: San Diego is 22-3-1 when scoring four-plus goals in a game, but just 9-19-5 when scoring three or less... The Gulls have only out-shot their opponent three times since the all-star break (22 games)... They are just 15 for 105 on the power play (14.3 percent) since the all-star break... Goaltender Eddy Ferhi has stopped 153 of his last 161 shots (.950 save percentage)... Sean O'Connor has 10 points (7g, 3a) in five games against the Aces this season... Max Birbraer has 11 points (3g, 8a) in nine games against Alaska...

ALASKA UPDATE: Alaska (37-16-7) begins the day first in the West, two points ahead of the second-place Bakersfield Condors and three points in front of the third-place Long Beach Ice Dogs... The Aces also own the best record in the National Conference and are only six points behind the Pensacola Ice Pilots for the top spot overall in the ECHL... In its last 33 games, dating back to Dec. 31, Alaska is 24-4-5... NHL All-Star Scott Gomez leads the ECHL with 72 points and 61 assists... Minard leads the league with 39 goals and is tied for fourth in the ECHL with 64 points... B.J. Young has four goals in five games against the Gulls this season...

TRANSACTIONS: Scott Borders was released yesterday... Chris Lynch was activated from the injured list yesterday after missing five games with a knee injury... Nicolas Corbeil was acquired Tuesday from the Mississippi Sea Wolves in exchange for Mike Garrow... Mark Pederson announced his retirement Monday... Nick Ganga (knee) and Evgueni Nourislamov (thumb) both remain on the injured list...
