Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC – Saturday afternoon played host to the final home game of the season for the Victoria Salmon Kings. The Idaho Steelheads were in town and provided stiff opposition for Victoria as they renewed their drive to the post season with an 8-2 victory.

With over 2600 in attendance for fan appreciation day, the Salmon Kings and goaltender Jason Stone got behind the eight ball in the first period and never recovered.

At 6:42 Lance Galbraith who had been a burr in the side of the Salmon Kings all series planted one firmly behind Stone to take the lead. Galbraith's sixth was followed by Andrei Vasilyev's first at 11:31 and Scott Burt's eighteenth at 14:38.

The second did not open well for Victoria either. At 7:15 Frank Lukes and Captain Dan Vandermeer set up Burt's nineteenth of the season and second of the game. Just under two minutes later the Steelheads stretched their lead to 5-0 on Bobby Russell's powerplay marker and Idaho had the game firmly in hand. Burt closed out the period with his third of the game and twentieth of the season at 11:52.

In the third the Salmon Kings got some spark from Mark Smith who came off the IR on Saturday, as he broke in past the Idaho defender, and beat Colin Zulianello who replaced Frank Doyle at the beginning of the period.

Lance Galbraith added his second of the game, followed by Matt Elich's first before Seth Leonard finished the scoring on the powerplay at 12:42 from Adam Campbell and Alexey Glukhov.

The game ended 8-2 and the Victoria Salmon Kings honoured their resilient fans with the "Shirt off our Backs" promotion where they gave their jerseys to lucky fans who had won them throughout the game. The Salmon Kings gave away a total of 70 prizes from their sponsors from the inaugural season.
