SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions continued their six-game series against the Frisco RoughRiders on Wednesday night. After dropping game one on Tuesday, the Missions offense provided 13 runs on 19 hits including three home runs. San Antonio plated five runs in the second inning and seven runs in the eighth inning. Jackson Merrill went 3-for-6 at the plate while finishing a home run shy of the cycle. The Missions evened the series with a 13-3 victory.
Justin Slaten was the starting pitcher for the RoughRiders. The Missions offense plated a run in the top of the first inning courtesy of a fielding blunder. Juan Fernandez hit a two-out single to keep the inning alive. Michael De La Cruz singled and Fernandez advanced to third base. On the play, De La Cruz was attempting to advance to second base and a throwing error from Luisangel Acuna allowed Fernandez to score. The Missions took a 1-0 lead.
Jared Kollar was the starting pitcher for the Missions. A lack of command aided Frisco in tying the game in the bottom half of the first inning. Kollar issued walks to Aaron Zavala and Evan Carter to start the frame. A throwing error from Chandler Seagle on a pickoff attempt allowed Zavala to move to third base. After striking out the next batter, a sacrifice fly from Thomas Saggese drove in Zavala.
San Antonio regained the lead after plating five runs in the top of the second inning. Daniel Johnson drew a leadoff walk and Korry Howell singled. Cole Cummings hit a three-run, opposite field home run over the left field wall. That was the end of the night for Slaten as Robby Ahlstrom took over. After retiring the first batter he faced, the southpaw hit Ripken Reyes and allowed a single to Jackson Merrill. With two outs in the inning, De La Cruz drove in both runners with a single to center field. The Missions took a 6-1 lead.
Frisco added their second run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs in the frame, Chris Seise doubled to keep the inning alive. Zavala drove in Seise with a double to left field. San Antonio held a 6-2 advantage.
The RoughRiders continued their comeback in the fourth inning and scored their third run of the game. Liam Hicks began the inning with a base hit. Kollar retired the next two batters before walking Zavala. Raul Brito took over on the mound for the Missions. The right-hander hit Carter with a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch from Brito allowed Hicks to score. The Missions had a 6-3 lead.
The Missions had a chance to increase their lead in the top of the seventh inning. Facing Triston Polley, Fernandez and De La Cruz hit back-to-back singles to begin the frame. Marcos Castanon grounded into a double play and Fernandez advanced to third base. Johnson drew a walk to keep the inning alive. Johnson attempted to steal second base and Fernandez attempted to steal home simultaneously. A fake throw from Frisco catcher David Garcia resulted in Fernandez being tagged out.
The Missions blew the game open with seven runs on eight consecutive hits in the top of the eighth inning. Howell began the inning with a solo home run to left field. Merrill drove in three runs with a bases loaded triple. Fernandez drove in two runs with a home run to left field. Lastly, Howell drove in his second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
