Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Defenseman Samuel Sjölund has committed to Western Michigan University. The 20-year-old Swede, drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 2019 NHL Draft (4th round, 111th overall), is set to take his talents to a club who plays in one of the most competitive collegiate hockey conferences, the NCHC, next season.
Sjölund was drafted by the Fighting Saints in the second round, 20th overall in Phase II of the 2021 USHL Draft, and has made an immediate impact in the lineup. He has scored two goals and an assist in six games, with a plus-2 rating to boot.
Sjölund, on committing to WMU: Overall, Western Michigan was the perfect fit for me. I've only heard great things about the school and more importantly the hockey program. So I'm really excited to be committed there and I can't wait to play there. It also feels good to have that whole process done so that I can now 100% focus on the Saints and our season.
GM Kalle Larsson: We are happy that Samuel gets to continue his development at WMU. He's a talented player and a great teammate. We look forward to following his progress at the NCAA level.
Head coach Greg Brown: Sammy is a solid, two-way defenseman who seamlessly transitioned into the USHL. His ability to defend as well as generate offense made him an attractive college recruit. We are very happy for Sam that he has chosen to continue his education and hockey career at WMU.
After ten years of being led by Andy Murray, the Broncos are now led by head coach Pat Ferschweiler, in his first year at the helm. Ferschweiler's eleven years on the coaching staff have seen them make the NCAA Tournament three times in that span (2011, 2012, 2017), and capture a CCHA championship in 2012. Sjölund is set to join a Broncos squad with longtime Fighting Saints standout Aidan Fulp on the blue line as well.
Before coming to Dubuque, Sjölund came up through the ranks with the AIK program, and saw time in the third tier of professional hockey in Sweden via loan.
