Fighting Saints Roar Back to Victory over Des Moines

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Nothing good comes easy. The Dubuque Fighting Saints, down 2-1 heading into the third period, utilized a four-goal third period to get the two points. Tristan Lemyre scored with 36 seconds remaining in the third period to give the Fighting Saints the lead, and Max Montes added an empty-net goal to seal a 5-3 win over the Des Moines Buccaneers at the Mystique Community Ice Center on Friday night.
Lemyre, sent on his way by Kenny Connors at the offensive blue line, was in alone and sniped the puck past Lucas Szyszka to give the Fighting Saints a 4-3 lead. It was the exclamation point to an offensive outburst in the third period. Montes knocked down a dump in and fired the puck from center ice into the empty net to cap off the win.
The win was not possible without a huge penalty kill late in the third period as well. Riley Rosenthal blocked two shots, and Philip Svedebäck, without his stick, scrambled to make two key saves to kill off the penalty, which came against the league's best power play unit.
The game was still in question early in the third period. Peter Kramer tied the game at two on an odd-man rush fueled by Riley Stuart at the 2:57 mark of the third period. But just 27 seconds later, Joshua Barnes capitalized on a loose puck rebound in which no Fighting Saint could clear the puck to give Des Moines back the lead.
A wayward dish by a Buccaneer fell into the lap of Kenny Connors, who rushed end to end to tie the game at three at 10:09. It was his fourth goal of the season.
For just the second time this season, the Fighting Saints scored the opening goal. Connor Kurth was sent in on a breakaway by William Hallén, and his deke to the backhand solved Szyszka to open the scoring.
Des Moines utilized the momentum swing to take the lead heading into the third period. Sully Scholle scored at 13:11, and Scout Truman added a goal at 4-on-4 at 18:34.
Both teams were held without a goal in the opening period. Des Moines entered the game with a 12-3 goal differential in the first period.
The penalty kill was perfect on the night, and Svedebäck made 19 saves on the night to pick up the win.
Dubuque is back in action on Saturday against the Chicago Steel at 7:05 p.m.
