Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WILMINGTON, DE - Starter Tyler Sample tossed the first seven scoreless innings, Michael Mariot finished with the afternoon two of his own, and the Wilmington Blue Rocks dealt the Pelicans their second shutout defeat in three days with a 3-0 win in the middle game of three Sunday afternoon at Daniel S. Frawley Stadium.

An up-and-down Pelicans offense got out to a good start against Sample in the first, putting runners at first and second with two outs, but hardly challenged the righty the rest of the way. He was the story for a Blue Rocks team that blew its largest lead of the season in Saturday's series-opening loss to the Birds. Sample (6-6) kept Myrtle Beach hitters off-balance all afternoon, only allowing multiple runners to reach in an inning once more after the first and retiring 15 of 16 at one point.

Pelicans starter Barret Loux, 5-0 with a 2.53 ERA in his last nine outings, ran into trouble after striking out the first two Wilmington batters in the first inning. Loux plunked Nick Van Stratten with a pitch, walked John Whittleman on four offerings behind him, and served up a two-out, two-run double to Ryan Stovall to get Wilmington into the lead. The Blue Rocks added another in the third to make it 3-0 against Loux (8-4) who struck out 11 to match a career high on the day. The right-hander worked six innings and was charged with all three Rocks runs earned on four hits while also walking two.

A night after rallying from a four-run deficit in a 7-6 victory Saturday, Myrtle Beach's offense went quiet Sunday in the Pelicans' sixth loss in nine games on their current ten-game road trip. Mariot (S, 4) entered in relief of Sample for the eighth inning, and though he matched Sample's hits total on the day by allowing three knocks, the righty from the University of Nebraska kept the visitors off the board. Myrtle Beach brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after back-to-back one-out singles by Zach Zaneski and Travis Adair, but Mariot got a flyout to center field from Jared Hoying and a groundout to first from Santiago Chirino to end it.

Andres James was the only Pelican with multiple hits on the day, singling twice. Shortstop Leury Garcia went 0-for-4 in his return to the lineup after a groin injury cost him three games.

Myrtle Beach and Wilmington hook up for the rubber game of this three-game set Monday night at 7:05 before the Pelicans' first off-day of the second half on Tuesday. Pelicans lefty Robbie Ross (8-2, 2.36) gets the nod for Myrtle Beach and will go for the series win against fellow southpaw Justin Marks (4-6, 4.59). Following this ten-game road trip, the Pelicans return home for the first of four with the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Coastal Field from July 13-16. Tickets for all Pelicans home games can be purchased by visiting the BB&T Coastal Field box office, the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or by calling (843)918-6000 or (877)918-TIXX.
