Myrtle Beach Pelicans Game Notes

July 10, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LATE BLOOMERS: The Pelicans' series-opening victory over the Blue Rocks broke a few marks for Myrtle Beach this season. For the first time in 30 tries, the Birds completed a comeback bid to win a game in which they trailed after eight innings. The Pelicans rallied with two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the Winston-Salem Dash in Wednesday night's series opener at BB&T Ballpark but couldn't complete the comeback while falling 8-7 in ten innings. Myrtle Beach is now 1-29 in games in which they trail after eight including a 1-21 mark on the road. The win was also the Pelicans' first in an extra-innings road game this season. Myrtle Beach is now 1-6 in such affairs. It was also the second time on this trip in which the Pelicans have won a game in which their opponents scored first. The Birds had only won two such road games all season prior to this ten-game swing away from home.

DEJA VU: In an odd parallel to the Pelicans' evening, Myrtle Beach's parent club had a cathartic comeback win of its own Saturday night. To cap off a difficult and emotional week in Arlington, Josh Hamilton cranked a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to the upper deck in right field to send the Rangers to a victory over the Oakland A's. Not only did Texas win by the same score as the Pelicans, 7-6, but it was also the big club's first victory this season in a game in which it trailed after eight innings. The Rangers were 0-30 in such contests prior to last night. The Saturday victory was Texas's sixth straight and kept the reigning Americna League champs a game up on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the West.

ADAIR DOWN'AIR: Since being transferred back to the Pelicans on June 29, Travis Adair has picked up right where he left off after a torrid first three weeks of the year. Adair started his season in Myrtle Beach and earned a late-April promotion to the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders after batting .367 in his firat 16 games of the season. Since his return, Adair is just a .270 hitter compared with his early season successes, but Travis is currently riding a five-game hitting streak during which he's batting .364 (8-for-22) with a run scored and three runs batted in.

SEEING THE BLUES: The Pelicans and Blue Rocks oddly both chose to wear their powder blue alternate jerseys Saturday night at Frawley Stadium. Myrtle Beach improved to 20-15 this season when wearing the alternates with their Saturday evening victory.
