Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, VA- A night after the Hillcats had 15 hits and scored eight runs, Sammy Solis kept Lynchburg in check as four pitchers combined to shut the Hillcats out. The Potomac offense scraped together enough runs to win 2-0 Sunday night.
J.R. Higley scored the first run of the game for the Nationals. He walked to lead off the top of the third inning, and Eury Perez sacrificed him to second. Hillcats starter Blaine Sims threw a pitch that catcher Braeden Schlehuber missed for a passed ball, allowing Higley to reach third. Later in the same at-bat, Sims threw a wild pitch and Higley came in to score the first run of the game.
The Nationals extended their lead in the top of the sixth. With runners on first and second and one out, Justin Bloxom hit a shot off the wall in left. Jeff Kobernus, on second, scored easily, and Destin Hood motored around from first and tried to score. Andrelton Simmons took the relay from left fielder Geraldo Rodriguez and gunned out Hood at the plate. The next batter struck out, and the Nationals led 2-0.
In the meantime, Sammy Solis threw a gem of a game in his second start with Potomac. Solis (2-0) pitched seven innings, and the Hillcats only managed four hits off of him, a night after the offense poured on 15 hits.
After two relievers worked the eighth inning for Potomac, Hector Nelo came in and pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his ninth save of the season and preserved a 2-0 win for the Nationals.
Sims took the loss, despite having a solid outing. Sims (2-4) gave up two runs, one earned, in six innings pitched and struck out five batters.
The Nationals improved their record to 10-7 in the second half, while the Hillcats fell to 6-11.
The Hillcats and Nationals end their three-game series Monday night. Righty Aaron Shafer (2-2) will take the mound for Lynchburg, and Potomac will send out Paul Demny (6-7). First pitch is at 7:05 pm, and the gates will open at 6.
The Hillcats On-Deck Show presented by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 6:40 pm. Tune in to 105.5 KD Country or go to lynchburg-hillcats.com to listen live to all the action.
