Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA (JULY 10, 2011) - For the second straight night, Salem got a strong outing in all facets as starting pitcher Chris Hernandez allowed one hit and the Sox offense struck for eight runs in Sunday night's 8-4 victory at LewisGale Field. The Red Sox have beaten Winston-Salem in five straight, and outscored the Dash 29-8 over the teams' last four meetings.
The Red Sox (9-8, 40-46) got on the board first in the third inning against starter Jake Petricka. With one out, Salem put together three consecutive base-hits. Kolbrin Vitek doubled and scored when Jorge Padron did the same. Bryce Brentz then homered to put the Red Sox up 3-0. It was Brentz's fifth home run in eight games against Winston-Salem (8-9, 40-47).
The scoring continued in the fourth when Salem had four straight two-out singles. Zach Gentile and Shannon Wilkerson had the first two base-hits, and scored on hits by Vitek and Padron.
Kyle Colligan got the Dash on the board in the fifth when he hit his fourth home run of the season to left field.
The Red Sox, though, responded against relief pitcher Stephen Sauer. Miles Head walked to start the inning and moved to second when Mark Wagner singled. Sauer struck out the next two batters before giving up run-scoring doubles to Gentile and Wilkerson.
Winston scored one in the sixth after loading the bases with nobody out. Daniel Wagner singled, Tyler Saladino walked, and Jared Mitchell singled to put runners at every base. Andy Wilkins drove home one run with a sacrifice fly to center, but Ian Gac followed by grounding into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Trailing 8-2, the Dash were able to get within four in the eighth inning. Saladino was hit by a pitch and moved to second when Mitchell walked. Wilkins drove in his second run of the game with a double, and Gac hit a sac fly to right, scoring Mitchell.
That was as close as the Dash got, as Winston put runners at first and second in the ninth before reliever Tom Ebert induced a double play from Saladino to end the game. Sox starter Chris Hernandez (8-5) got the win after five innings. He gave up one hit, the Colligan home run, and struck out five. Petricka (0-3) allowed five runs (all earned) on seven hits in four innings and was hit with the loss.
Winston-Salem and Salem finish up their three-game series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. at LewisGale Field. LHP Joe Serafin (1-6, 5.42) will start for the Dash against RHP Ryan Pressly (4-8, 4.41). Fans can catch all the action on www.wsdash.com starting at 6:45 p.m.
