Frederick Keys News Release

A night after Frederick blasted a season-high four home runs, RHP Marty Popham kept the Keys in check as the K-Tribe topped Frederick, 3-2, on Sunday evening. The Keys were held without a run until 1B Tyler Townsend hit a solo shot off Popham in the seventh inning. Frederick plated another run in the eighth but was held scoreless in the ninth as they fell to Kinston in game two of the three-game set.

CF Tyler Holt led off Sunday's contest with a bang. Facing RHP Ryohei Tanaka, Holt lined a pitch over the left field fence for his second home run of the season. The leadoff homer from Holt gave the K-Tribe a lead they would not relinquish.

Kinston put another run on the board in the fourth inning. 3B Adam Abraham hit a single to left field to leadoff the inning. Following an Abner Abreu walk, 1B Chase Burnette put down a sac bunt to move Abraham and Abreu each up a base. C Roberto Perez made it a 2-0 game after he hit into a fielder's choice that scored Abraham from third.

The K-Tribe tacked on another run in the sixth when Abner Abreu hit his fourth home run in five games. Abreu's eighth long ball of the season put Kinston in front by three runs.

The sixth inning was Tanaka's frame of the night. Tanaka struck out five, walked two, and allowed three runs on seven hits over his six innings of work.

Marty Popham held Frederick scoreless through the first six innings but Tyler Townsend led off the seventh inning with an opposite field blast that out the Keys on the board.

Trailing by two runs entering the home-half of the eighth inning, Jacob Julius reached on a bunt single. C Justin Dalles followed with a single that advanced Julius to third. With no outs and men on the corners, Steve Bumbry pinch hit for SS Michael Rooney. Popham struck out Bumbry for out number one. Popham then sat down 3B Dale Mollenhauer for the second out of the inning. 2B Bobby Stevens stepped to the plate with two out and two on. Following a furious battle, in which Stevens fouled off four consecutive pitches, Stevens singled to right field to bring home Julius and cut the deficit to one run.

After surrendering the RBI single to Bobby Stevens, Marty Popham was relieved by LHP Chris Jones. Jones faced just one batter as he struck out Tyler Townsend on a borderline pitch on the outside corner of the plate. Following the strikeout, Townsend was ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes.

The one-run deficit was as close as the Keys would get on Sunday as Frederick was retired in order in the ninth.

Ryohei Tanaka picked up the loss and dropped to 5-3 on the season while Marty Popham improved to 3-0. RHP Preston Guilmet faced just one batter on the night but still notched his 23rd save of the season.

The Keys and K-Tribe will play the rubbermatch of the three-game series on Monday afternoon. LHP Nick Haughian (5-4, 4.11) will take the hill for Frederick while he will be opposed by RHP Clayton Cook (6-5, 3.38). First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium on Monday is scheduled for 4 p.m.
