Frederick Out Powers Kinston

July 10, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Kinston Indians News Release

A furious comeback fell three runs shy for the K-Tribe Saturday night in a 10-7 series opening loss in Frederick.

Kinston jumped on top early as Tyler Holt stole second after a leadoff walk. Holt came home thanks to a two out RBI double off the bat of Jeremie Tice.

Kinston's advantage was quickly wiped clean thanks to a four run Frederick first. With the tying run already plated and two base runners aboard, Tyler Townsend hit a three run home run to center to put the Keys on top, a lead Frederick would not relinquish the rest of the way. The Keys added a five run fifth inning that proved to be the difference in the ballgame. The scoring deluge included home runs in three straight at bats, a feat Frederick hasn't accomplished since 2005.

The Indians continued to battle, though, continuing the recent power surge. Abner Abreu blasted his seventh home run in the fourth inning. Abreu has homered in three of the last four games. Anthony Gallas broke out of an 0-21 slide with a three run homer in the fifth to draw the K-Tribe to within five. Adam Abraham used his team leading 13th home run in the ninth to draw the deficit to three runs and bring Sean Gleason in to the game. Kinston has hit eight home runs in the last five games.

League saves leader Sean Gleason entered in the ninth and recorded the final two outs. Kinston never brought the tying run to the on deck circle, keeping Gleason from picking up the save and Frederick's single season save record. Keys starter Nathan Moreau picked up his ninth win, becoming the first in the Carolina League to do so. Moreau allowed five earned runs to the Kinston offense over five innings.

K-Tribe starter Steve Wright picks up his first loss of the season, giving up ten runs (nine earned) over four innings. Wright allowed ten hits, walked two, struck out five and gave up four home runs. Francisco Jimenez, Rob Bryson and Kyle Landis combined to keep Frederick scoreless over the final four innings.

Kinston and Frederick get underway in game two from Harry Grove Stadium at 6:00 eastern Sunday night. Kinston right hander Marty Popham is scheduled to start. Popham will be opposed by Ryohei Tanaka.
