Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

Wednesday was filled with action for the Lincoln Saltdogs. One of just two Saltdogs players still with the team who had been with the club since the team's inception, Darren Doskocil, announced his retirement, effective after Thursday night's game. Saltdogs starting pitcher Travis Teeter had his contract purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers organization, and is scheduled to begin with Class A High Desert. And finally, the Saltdogs won their third game in a row, and fifth in a row at home, by a 5-4 score over the Sioux City Explorers.

The Saltdogs got four of their five runs in the first three innings. The big blow in the first frame was a Charles Peterson two-run homer, his 11th longball of the season. Lincoln got two more in the third inning, on a groundout from Bryan Warner that scored JuJu Foreman, and a sacrifice fly from Peterson that scored Josh Patton.

The Explorers did most of their scoring in the middle innings, putting one run on the board on a Bobby Brown RBI single in the fourth inning, then two more on a Todd Brock home run in the sixth, which made the score 4-3.

Lincoln got one of those runs back in the sixth inning, when Doskocil singled, stole second, and scored on a Jeb Wiseman single.

Lincoln starter Darren Truty departed after seven innings, having allowed 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 6. Ryan Trytten entered in relief, and after two outs saw runners on both 2nd and 3rd base. Lincoln closer Byron Embry entered and gave up a solid single to left field which scored Desi Wilson, but the Jorge Moreno throw was in time to beat runner Marcel Longmire, who knocked over Lincoln catcher Wiseman but was unable to dislodge the ball. Embry shut down the Explorers 1-2-3 in the ninth inning, preserving the 5-4 lead.

Truty earned the win, improving his record to 5-7 on the year. Sioux City starting pitcher Chris Swiatkiewicz allowed 5 earned runs in 5.1 innings and took the loss, dropping his record to 5-8 on the year. Embry picked up his 8th save.

Lincoln improves to 13-20 in the second half (42-39 overall), while Sioux City falls to 12-20 in the second half (30-50 overall). The clubs will meet again on Thursday night as Lincoln looks for the four-game series sweep. Former Saltdogs pitcher Thomas Ford (0-1, 3.60 with Sioux City) is scheduled for the Explorers, while Mike Zipser (6-6, 4.45) is the probable starter for the Saltdogs.

In other Saltdogs news, Travis Teeter's spot on the Lincoln roster was taken by left-handed relief pitcher Matt Haverly, who had been on the disabled list. Doskocil will be leaving the Saltdogs following Thursday night's game to accept a Physical Education position in his home state of California. He is the franchise leader in a number of categories, including career at-bats (1357) and career runs scored (222).
