Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Gary, IN- The Winnipeg Goldeyes hit four home runs, two in each game, to power their way to a doubleheader sweep of the Gary SouthShore RailCats at U. S. Steel Yard.
Pat Scalabrini and Greg Morrison each homered and Billy Zoffinger plated a two-run single as the Goldeyes defeated the RailCats 9-4 in the opening game.
Zoffinger's hit, one of four off RailCats starter Travis Kerber (1-6) in a three-run second inning, gave Winnipeg a 2-0 lead. Scalabrini socked a three-run homer off Kerber in the fourth inning to put the Goldeyes up 6-0.
The RailCats twice closed to within three runs, on an RBI-double by Darin Kinsolving and a two-un single by Pete DeYoung in the fourth inning, and, after Winnipeg had tacked on an insurance run, on Brandon O'Neal's RBI-triple in the sixth. But Morrison's two-run homer in the seventh put the game out of reach.
In Winnipeg's 5-1 victory in the nightcap, T.J. Soto hit a solo shot in the second inning to give Winnipeg a 1-0 lead. DeYoung's leadoff double in the third led to a tying run for the RailCats.
Blair Barbier and Andy Larned hit a pair of doubles in the fifth inning to give Winnipeg a 2-1 advantage.
The RailCats failed to tie the score in the bottom of the inning when, after walking and advancing to second base on DeYoung's sacrifice, Darin Kinsolving failed to score on O'Neal's double off the right field wall. Winnipeg starter Brad Purcell (8-5) retired Rickey Clinton on a pop fly and struck out Anthony Iapoce to preserve the lead.
Zoffinger capped a two-out rally in the sixth with a three-run homer off Dan Soria (4-5). The game was delayed by rain for 30 minutes in the middle of the sixth before being called.
The RailCats (11-21 second half, 24-56 overall) continue a 10-game homestand at U.S. Steel Yard on Thursday, August 19, a Thirsty Thursday (RailCats souvenir cup for first 1,000 adults 21 and older; $2 Miller and Miller Lite 16 ounce drafts) game that will feature the first-ever Northwest Indiana appearance by the Famous Chicken. Thursday's 7 p.m. game against Winnipeg (20-11 second half, 46-32 overall) will also be broadcast on the RailCats Radio Network, including WEFM 95.9, WJOB 1230 AM, and www.sportsjuice.com, beginning at 6:45 p.m.
