Joliet, ILâ The Joliet JackHammers (19-13, 43-37) defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries (12-20, 28-52) 7-to-1 in front of 2,826 fans in a rain-shortened, 7-inning game. The JackHammers have a 2-to-1 advantage in this four-game series. The JackHammers remained in first place of the Northern League's South Division.
In the bottom of the 1st inning, Gabby Delgado (1-for-2) reached on a one out single. Later in the inning with two outs, Bubba Smith (3-for-5) crushed his 3rd home run to left field for a 2-to-0 JackHammers lead. In the top of the 2nd inning, former JackHammer Glenn Davis (2-for-3) unloaded a solo home run, his 15th home run and 46th RBI of the season. The JackHammers led 2-to-1.
Jermaine Allensworth (0-for-3) was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the 4th inning. After an error and a walk, Bubba connected for a line drive 2-RBI single to left field. One out later, Matt McCay (2-for-4) added a 2-RBI single to right-center field. The JackHammers led 6-to-1. Bubba added a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the 5th inning for a 7-to-1 JackHammers lead. Bubba hit the 11th multiple home run game in team history. He had five RBI for the game and has 26 RBI in 26 games played for the JackHammers
Canaries starting RHP Wes Faust (4-7) pitched five innings for the loss. He allowed seven runs (six earned), walked two, struck out one, uncorked one wild pitch, called for one balk and hit two batters. JackHammers starting RHP Rich Hyde (11-4) earned the win pitching seven complete innings. He allowed one earned run, three hits, walked none and struck out two. Hyde is the JackHammers all-time leader with 31 wins and the Northern League all-time leader with 84 wins.
LOOSE GRAVEL: The JackHammers tied a team record for most home runs with 76 (originally set in 2002). Prior to the game, the JackHammers placed RHP Nathan Kent and RHP Mike Ott on irrevocable waivers with the purpose of giving them their unconditional release. For Thursday afternoon games, season ticket holders with parking passes should park in the parking lot at Jacob Henry Mansion and at the nearby warehouse. Former Chicago White Sox pitching great Billy Pierce will join Bryan Dolgin on the JackHammers radio broadcast on Thursday.
The JackHammers and Canaries will complete this four-game series with a 2:05 pm first pitch on Thursday at Silver Cross Field. RHP Cory Walters (8-4, 4.40) will start for the Canaries, and RHP Matt Petrusek (2-0, 4.15) will start for the JackHammers.
