Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The Lincoln Saltdogs earned their seventh win in a row on Monday, beating the St. Paul Saints 4-1 at Midway Stadium. Lincoln improves to 19-23 on the season.
Saltdogs starter Jim Paduch (3-3) turned in one of his best starts of the season, tossing seven scoreless innings and allowing just three hits. Paduch walked three and struck out five, earning his first win in exactly one month. St. Paul starter Brandon Kintzler (6-2) entered the game with a 2.14 ERA, but Lincoln touched him for four runs on nine hits in his six innings of work.
Lincoln took the lead for good in the first inning, when Phil Hawke hit a two-run home run, his sixth of the season. The game settled into a pitchers' duel until the fifth, when Pichi Balet hit a two-out RBI single to increase the Saltdogs lead to three. Brandon Jones finished off the scoring for the Dogs with an RBI single of his own in the sixth.
As they often seem to so, the Saints made it interesting in the ninth. The first two batters of the inning reached on singles, prompting Lincoln to bring in closer Chris Thompson. A force play put runners on the corners, and a wild pitch scored St. Paul's only run of the night. A walk brought the tying run to the plate with only one out, but Thompson retired the final two batters on harmless flyouts to earn his fourth save in a Lincoln uniform, and 14th of the year overall.
Albenis Machado finished the night 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Brandon Jones also had a pair of hits for Lincoln, increasing his hitting streak to seven games.
The two teams play game two of their three-game series Tuesday night at 7:05pm. Jarrett Gardner will make the start for Lincoln, his first outing since throwing a no-hitter last Thursday.
