St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (June 29, 2009) - The Lincoln Saltdogs chewed up the St. Paul Saints with a 4-1 victory Monday night at Midway Stadium in front of 4,423 fans. Marty Scott, former Saints manager, and his Saltdogs returned to the Twin Cities only to hand the Saints their fifth straight loss. Lincoln starter Jim Paduch was excellent en route to picking up his third win of the season. The Saltdogs have won seven straight games and are now just one game back of the Saints in the North Division.

Paduch had his best stuff of the year on Monday, dealing 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits while walking three and striking out five. He also had the comfort of working with a lead from the outset. With one out and a man on in the first inning, Phil Hawke crushed a home run to right field, his sixth of the season. Hawke's two run blast put the visiting Saltdogs up 2-0 and that proved to be enough. Phil Balet, a former member of the Saints, singled home a run in the fifth to give Lincoln a 3-0 lead. After a Shea McFeely double in the sixth, Brandon Jones lined a single to center to score McFeely and increase the Saltdogs lead to 4-0.

The Saints had their ace, Brandon Kintzler, on the mound but he was not given the necessary support. Kintzler lasted 6.0 innings, yielding four runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out one. He did his best to keep the Saints in the ballgame but they could never mount a rally against Paduch. Jacob Butler scored the lone run of the game for the Saints in the ninth inning off of a wild pitch by Josh Giles. Chris Thompson picked up his 14th save of the year after supplanting Giles and closing out the Saints in the ninth.

Kyle Foster was perfect in his relief appearance, dealing 3.0 shutout innings to keep the Saints within reach. Foster retired all nine men he faced and struck out three. Brent Krause provided the only extra base hit for St. Paul with a double in the fourth inning. Jason Cooper went 0-3 in his debut at first base for the Saints. Cooper got the start in place of Todd Self who retired from baseball earlier in the day. After an 0-4 day at the plate, Tony Mansolino's hitting streak ended at 11 games.
