Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - Lincoln Saltdogs starting pitcher Jarrett Gardner has been named the American Association Pitcher of the Week, for June 22-28. The award was announced by PA-Sportsticker, the official statistician of the American Association.
On Thursday, June 25, Gardner threw the first no-hitter in Lincoln Saltdogs history, beating El Paso 4-0 at Haymarket Park. The right-hander needed just 92 pitches to subdue the Diablos, and struck out four while allowing only one baserunner all night, a two-out walk in the sixth inning. The no-no was just the third in the history of the American Association.
Gardner has now been honored as a player of the week by the American Association twice in his career. He first earned the award in July of last season. Gardner was also the league's pitcher of the month last July. Earlier this year, he set the Saltdogs' all-time record for wins.
The Saltdogs have now had three players earn a weekly league honor in 2009. First baseman Phil Hawke was named the American Association Batter of the Week for May 18-24, and pitcher Jonathan Figueroa was the Pitcher of the Week for June 1-7.
The Saltdogs return home on Friday, July 3, when they host the Wichita Wingnuts. For more team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
