Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The Pelicans picked up a series win on Sunday, defeating the Captains 7-4. Luis Bautista hit a three run homer as part of a five run Pelicans' fifth. Dane DeValk earned the win, and Aaron Cunningham was hit with the loss. Hunter Davis picked up his ninth save.
The Captains took the lead initially, as Jonathan Reynoso scored when Andres Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice. The Pelicans tied it back up in the top of the second. Luis Bautista led off by hitting a ball that dropped, untouched, in right field. He reached second on the play that was ruled an error. On a fly out to center, Bautista tagged and advanced to third. Adam Deleo followed with a groundout to shortstop that scored Bautista, and the game was tied at one.
The tie was short-lived as the Captains scored BJ Wheeler on a Jonathan Reynoso single in the bottom of the second. The Pelicans tied it at two in the top of the fourth, as Marcos Rodriguez led off the inning with a single. He moved to second on a balk, and then advanced to third on a Luis Bautista single. When Dallas Christison hit a fly ball to right field, Rodriguez tagged and scored.
The Captains took the lead for the last time in the bottom of the fourth. Tied at two, Kevin Griffin led off with a single. After DeValk struck out the next two batters, Reynoso singled. Dwayne White followed with an RBI single to score Griffin. 3-2 Captains.
The Pelicans blew the game open in the fifth. Antoin Gray singled with one out. Burch hit next with a single of his own. Marcos Rodriguez came to the plate with two out and hit an RBI-single that scored Gray to tie the game. The Pelicans weren't done however. With Burch and Rodriguez on, Luis Bautista hit a three run homer over the right-field wall to put the Pelicans up 6-3. The Pelicans added another run of insurance as Dallas Christison hit a single, stole second, and touched home after an Adam Deleo RBI-single.
Dane DeValk pitched 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs, nine hits, four strikeouts, and four walks before deferring to Tyler Wilson. Wilson lasted a shutout inning and a third, striking out one. Ron Hill pitched the eighth, giving up one run as Kevin Griffin led off with a walk. BJ Wheeler hit an RBI-double, and the Captains scored the last run of the game.
Hunter Davis came on in the ninth inning and earned his ninth save of the year. Luis Bautista went 3-5 with the three-run shot and scored twice himself. Chase Burch finished 3-4 and scored, while Antoin Gray went 3-5 with a run. Adam Deleo hit 2-4 and drove in two runs.
The Pelicans have Monday off and will host the Sioux Falls Canaries for a three-game series Tuesday through Thursday. Tickets are available now at Pensacola-area Circle K locations, www.pensacolapelicans.com, and via phone at (850) 934-8444. All games are scheduled to begin at 6:35 p.m.
